Yemeni Forces 'Reclaim' Bab al-Mandeb

Saudi-led air cover facilitated dozens of strikes in the last 48 hours to support the launch of Operation Dawn Yemen, a multi-front offensive announced by the presidential council.

These forces claim to have seized control of Dubab, a small coastal town, with the offensive receiving substantial air cover from Saudi Arabia, which has conducted dozens of strikes within 48 hours. This military strategy aims to engage Houthis on multiple fronts to prevent them from consolidating power.

Houthi forces had previously established control over the majority of the Red Sea coast, including strategic locations like the port of Hodeidah, which remains a key supply route for government forces.

The need for such an alliance has intensified following Houthi drone strikes on critical Saudi Aramco infrastructure.

Despite the strong language, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan noted that invoking such clauses is legally intricate and historically rare.

Instead, they recommend intensifying airstrikes as the primary method to secure Saudi oil facilities and the critical maritime pathways of the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb.

Houthi forces, however, dispute these claims, characterizing them as false.

Analysts suggest that Iran's support for groups in Iraq and Yemen is a central factor in the ongoing conflicts in the region, fueling a broader power struggle.

The Houthis seek to consolidate control over the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a move that Saudi Arabia and the GCC vehemently oppose due to its critical importance as a global trade route.

Internal divisions within the anti-Houthi coalition have created a power vacuum, as Saudi and Emirati forces previously backed rival factions after failing to maintain a unified front.

Reports indicate that the operation targets control over the Dhubab district and a nearby airbase, with strategic success dependent on seizing mountainous regions overlooking supply routes to Al-Mukha.

Yemeni government forces may be employing tactical retreats to reposition for disruptions of key Houthi supply lines.

Houthi officials officially dismiss these reports as propaganda, aimed at misleading public opinion.

Saudi airstrikes have significantly intensified in the Houthi-held capital, Sanaa, marking a clear escalation in the conflict.

This intensification signals the collapse of a previous verbal agreement between both sides to keep their respective capitals off-limits, with Houthis actively targeting Saudi Aramco oil facilities and threatening strikes on the East-West pipeline to Yanbu.

Houthi forces remain dominant in the north, while the Yemeni government controls areas in the south. This fluidity is complicated by the fact that roughly 80% of the Yemeni population lives in only 30% of the country's geography, further entrenching the tribal nature of the conflict. The Houthi alignment with Iran also contributes to regional instability, demonstrating spillover effects beyond Yemen's borders.

This approach allows Iran to distribute the financial and human costs of a prolonged conflict across the region, rather than bearing the full burden itself.

While the coalition could potentially retake strategic areas, a complete eradication of the Houthis is unlikely, drawing parallels to the protracted conflict in Afghanistan.

The Bab al-Mandeb strait is vulnerable to disruption by even small groups, as insurers would likely halt shipping through the area if sabotage occurred, regardless of who controls the surrounding territory.

Government and Saudi forces must leverage temporary military gains to compel a negotiated settlement rather than relying on a solely military resolution for long-term stability.

Houthis possess sophisticated hypersonic ballistic missiles, enabling them to target critical Saudi Arabian infrastructure.

Since September 3rd, the group has consistently targeted Aramco oil facilities and transport infrastructure, prompting Saudi Arabia to intensify its retaliatory air campaign.

These ground advances are heavily reliant on intensified Saudi-led airstrikes, which are designed to weaken Houthi positions, with securing the Al-Waziyah district and its mountains seen as a prerequisite for regaining control of Bab al-Mandeb.

Houthi forces dismiss government reports of reclaiming areas like Dhubab as propaganda, designed to rally fragmented pro-government forces.

The conflict has escalated into a full-scale war, marked by mutual strikes on capital cities such as Riyadh and Sanaa, indicating a significant breakdown of previous understandings.

Any prospects for a negotiated ceasefire have vanished, as both sides are currently engaged in efforts to eliminate each other through military means.

Despite government efforts to exploit Houthi vulnerabilities along the Red Sea coastline, the status of the city of Taiz continues to be a major concern.

The fall of Taiz to Houthi control would severely disrupt vital military supply routes to Al-Mukha and Bab al-Mandeb, effectively crippling the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

Any tactical gains made by government forces elsewhere could be negated if they lose control of Taiz, underscoring its pivotal role in the broader conflict.

Houthis are known to strategically withdraw from areas to mitigate the impact of heavy Saudi air strikes, a tactic observed repeatedly in the conflict.

Maintaining control of the strategic perimeters around Al-Mukha remains a key priority for the Houthis to preserve their hold on the coastal line. The military situation remains highly fluid, with both sides engaged in a tit-for-tat campaign, making it challenging to definitively assess the true territorial status at any given moment.
