Sodium Batteries Officially Enter ESS Market

Electrochemical has long been interested in sodium battery technology. In past videos, we predicted that Chinese companies would enter mass production and secure a niche in the market, even if they couldn't completely replace lithium batteries. However, commercialization has taken longer than anticipated.

The sodium battery market has changed significantly in 2026. Beyond simple lab prototypes, gigawatt-scale contracts, establishment of mass production lines, and concrete customer delivery schedules have begun to emerge. Originally, sodium batteries were highlighted as an alternative when lithium prices were very high, and interest should have waned after lithium prices dropped significantly. However, contrary to expectations, sodium batteries are moving into the commercialization phase.

Despite the drop in lithium prices, discussions about mass production and customer delivery of sodium batteries are becoming more concrete in 2026. The direction mentioned in past videos—that sodium batteries would find opportunities by occupying specific market niches rather than replacing lithium—has proven correct, but the pace of commercialization was much slower than expected.

The clearest signal of sodium battery commercialization comes from CATL. In June 2026, CATL unveiled 'Tenner Sodium,' aiming to start deliveries to Chinese customers in September and achieve a cumulative production of 1 GW by year-end. Additionally, in April, they announced a strategic collaboration with Hyperstrong to supply 60 GW of sodium-ion batteries over three years. This signifies that sodium-ion batteries are now being discussed in terms of large-scale supply plans at the gigawatt level.

CATL's production schedule and supply cooperation, along with HiNA's delivery case, represent different stages of evidence, but they clearly show a trend of the technology moving from laboratory cells to customers and real system applications.

The reason sodium-ion batteries survived wasn't solely due to lithium prices. For electric vehicles, battery weight directly impacts driving range and efficiency, but in energy storage systems (ESS), where batteries are stationary, the disadvantage of somewhat lower energy density due to weight is relatively smaller. Instead, in the ESS market, system cost, cycle life, thermal management and safety, efficiency, and supply stability are more critically valued. In other words, ESS is not a market where sodium batteries automatically gain an advantage, but rather one where the criteria for evaluating batteries change. We have entered an era where the optimal chemical system is chosen based on the location and role, which is why ESS is the first battleground for sodium-ion batteries. This trend also connects with Tesla's expansion of its ESS business. As Tesla significantly grows its ESS business, centered on Megapack, the question of which battery chemistry will survive in this market is as crucial as in the automotive market. Of course, this does not mean that Megapack currently uses sodium ions.

Thermal management, safety, efficiency, and supply stability become very important in the ESS market. Therefore, ESS is not a market where sodium batteries automatically gain an advantage, but rather one where the criteria for evaluating batteries change. We are in an era where the most suitable battery chemistry is chosen based on specific locations and roles, which is why sodium-ion batteries are finding their first opportunity in the ESS market. This trend aligns with Tesla's Megapack-centric ESS business expansion, and the success of various battery chemistries in the energy storage system market is as crucial as in the EV market. Currently, Megapack does not use sodium-ion batteries.

The second twist relates to energy density. According to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) 2026 comparison of cell-specific energy densities, sodium-ion is approximately 175 Wh/kg, LFP is about 205 Wh/kg, and NMC is around 265 Wh/kg. Although sodium-ion batteries have made significant progress, a weight disadvantage still exists for long-range electric vehicles (EVs). Due to this gap, it is more realistic to apply different batteries based on vehicle use, driving range, and climate conditions, rather than using the same chemistry for all vehicles.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the average annual price of battery-grade lithium carbonate fell sharply from $71,000 per ton in 2022 to $41,300 in 2023, with an estimated $14,000 in 2024. In early 2026, lithium prices more than doubled compared to the same period last year, but they are still about 70% lower than their 2022 peak. The fact that sodium projects continued even after lithium prices became cheaper is the third twist. This indicates that the logic for sodium has expanded beyond mere raw material costs to supply chain and application considerations. The second reason for the delay is the manufacturing process.

It was estimated at $41,300 in 2023 and $14,000 in 2024. In early 2026, although lithium prices more than doubled compared to the previous year, they remain about 70% lower than their 2022 peak. The fact that sodium projects continued even after lithium became cheaper is the third twist. This demonstrates that the logic for sodium batteries has expanded beyond simply raw material costs to supply chain stability and specific applications. Even if sodium raw materials are abundant, the overall battery price is determined separately. In the actual manufacturing process, the uniformity of hard carbon quality, initial efficiency, manufacturing yield, and separator production line utilization rates dictate the actual cost. During mass production, the bottleneck was found to be in the hard carbon for the anode rather than sodium itself. The IEA explains that the hard carbon supply chain is not yet developed and is concentrated in China.

CATL also cited gas generation, moisture control, aluminum foil adhesion, and anode formation as mass production bottlenecks. Ultimately, the delay in sodium battery commercialization was not due to a simple chemical formula. It required the entire process of making affordable raw materials into uniform cells, mass producing them, and ensuring customers trust and purchase them. In other words, commercialization is not an endpoint when technology is perfected, but a complex process where production and customer trust are built together. Country-specific differences are also clear.

Country-specific differences are also clear. In China, companies like CATL, HiNA, Changhan, and Hyperstrong are building a sodium battery ecosystem by connecting cells, vehicles, and system integration. Large-scale production ecosystems and domestic electric vehicle (EV) demand support China's rapid progress. In the U.S., Peak Energy announced a sodium storage plant in Sacramento with a capacity of up to 14 GW, targeting production and shipments in Q1 2027, but at the same time, Natron Energy suspended operations, showing both expansion plans and business closures.

Natron Energy has ceased operations. Thus, in the U.S., expansion plans and business closures are occurring simultaneously. For South Korea, it's more of a priority issue than a lack of sodium battery technology. LG Energy Solution is developing sodium-ion batteries for ESS and future mobility, targeting commercialization in 2027. Samsung SDI has also revealed roadmaps for AI data center UPS and utility-scale applications. The difference observed in currently disclosed data is more about priorities and speed of mass production than technology ownership.

Market size must be viewed objectively. The IEA analyzes that current sodium cell manufacturing capacity is just over 1% of lithium-ion. Even all announced sodium projects for 2030 combined only amount to about 7% of confirmed lithium battery plans for the same year, making it still a small market. However, with CATL's supply collaboration, Tenner's schedule, and HiNA system deliveries, it is difficult to call sodium-ion batteries merely laboratory technology anymore. This is the current position of sodium-ion.

Re-evaluating the current situation, the direction for sodium batteries was accurate, but the timing was too early. Predictions that Chinese companies would eventually reach mass production and that ESS would be an important first market proved correct. However, the speed at which sodium batteries established themselves in the market was much slower than expected. Even as lithium prices dropped and LFP batteries maintained strong competitiveness, sodium batteries had to overcome numerous challenges one by one, including hard carbon issues, manufacturing yield, and customer certification. Therefore, current sodium batteries are focusing on carving out their own niche in areas where high energy density is not a mandatory requirement, rather than completely displacing lithium or LFP.
