Planet Labs Launches TPUs into Space for Data Centers

From Vandenberg Space Force Base, the mission is deploying 20 specialized spacecraft and 'Super Dove' satellites as Planet Labs executes its fourth launch this year, CEO Will Marshall stated. The mission involves launching these satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base, adding to the company's growing orbital fleet.

The launch includes a diverse payload, consisting of specialized spacecraft and 18 of their 'Super Dove' satellites, with another launch scheduled in the coming weeks.

This mission marks the first time that Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), specialized hardware for machine learning, are being flown into space. Planet Labs CEO Will Marshall described this as a 'tech demo' to evaluate how these powerful processors, considered the fastest for machine learning, perform in orbit.

The long-term vision behind this collaboration with Google is to explore the feasibility of establishing functional data centers in space, pushing the boundaries of orbital computing.

The latest satellite deployment includes Planet Labs' second Tanager spacecraft, specifically designed for global methane tracking, to monitor emissions worldwide. Additionally, 18 new 'Super Dove' satellites are part of the payload, enhancing the company's ability to image the entire Earth's landmass daily.

This daily global scanning capability is a core operational strength of Planet Labs, providing consistent and comprehensive imagery for various applications.

With 3,000 images for every point on Earth, Planet Labs possesses an extensive training base for these models, enabling a wide range of applications from agricultural support and deforestation prevention to tracking security threats.

The effectiveness of AI is directly correlated with the quality and volume of data it is trained on, underscoring the importance of Planet Labs' comprehensive imagery collection for developing robust intelligence.

Data centers on Earth face significant energy challenges in powering high-demand processors like TPUs and GPUs. According to Will Marshall, placing solar panels in a sun-synchronous orbit in space can generate five times more power compared to Earth-based installations, as they continuously face the sun.

On Earth, reliance on solar power alone leads to intermittent data centers requiring supplementary batteries, nuclear power, or gas to overcome the day-night cycle and weather disruptions. In contrast, a space-based infrastructure primarily needs only chips, solar panels, and heat radiators to function efficiently.

Will Marshall stated that while some latency exists, it is not significant enough for consumers to notice.

The company is confident in its ability to manage data flow to and from orbit effectively, minimizing concerns about connectivity for space-based operations.

The primary goal for this mission is to validate the performance of TPUs in the challenging space environment. Engineers will closely monitor for radiation upsets and evaluate the efficiency of cooling systems, such as radiators, in maintaining optimal operating conditions.

Planet Labs is already planning a follow-up mission with Google, which will involve flying two spacecraft in formation. This formation flying is critical for keeping multiple computers in close proximity, a necessary step for developing distributed space computing capabilities.

Having more computing power in space enables Planet Labs to process satellite data at the edge, directly on orbit, leading to faster analytical insights. This capability is crucial for emergency scenarios, as demonstrated by the LA and Palisades fires, where imagery and AI analytics were available within hours.

Will Marshall emphasized that reducing this data turnaround from hours to minutes through in-space processing could potentially help save more lives in critical situations. Moving intelligence to space offers a significant operational benefit by expediting the delivery of actionable information.
