S&P 500 Reaches New Heights, Market Breadth Weakens
The S&P 500 and NASDAQ indices recently achieved record closes despite a slight pullback, indicating continued bullish sentiment in specific market segments.
However, market breadth, a measure of participation across the market, is currently worse than it was six months ago.
Only 10 of the 11 S&P 500 groups advanced yesterday, with utilities leading the gains, underscoring the narrow nature of the current market rally, heavily concentrated in tech-heavy stocks rather than broad-based participation.
Julie Hyman noted that the market's performance depends on perspective, whether it was a narrow rally or a slightly broadening one.
