Philippines Builds Base in West Philippine Sea

This project is a strategic move to strengthen Manila's long-term presence in the disputed region, despite objections from Beijing.

The new shelter port on Lawak Island is specifically designed to overcome historical limitations imposed by shallow waters and a narrow approach, which have traditionally restricted vessel access to the outpost. This facility will ensure more reliable delivery of personnel and equipment, bolstering the Philippines' operational capabilities.

In response, Manila asserts its long-term administrative control over the area, which it claims to have maintained since 1974.

This classification means that while it can generate a territorial sea extending up to 12 nautical miles, it is not entitled to a 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or its own continental shelf.

These launchers were identified as being capable of deploying sea mines, and this incident marks the first US strike on Iran since late July.
