Kim Chul-woo, Mayor of Boseong County, Re-elected Amidst Cut-off Controversy

Kim Chul-woo, the son of the Boseong County Mayor, faced a combined trial for drug and drunk driving charges. A total of eight lawyers, including from the large law firm Yulchon, were retained for this case, raising suspicions of legal fees being paid on his behalf. Questions arose regarding the source of the vast legal fees, especially given that Mayor Kim's assets had not significantly changed.

Local journalists have alleged that a representative of a civil engineering construction company, which secured public contracts in Boseong County, paid the legal fees, serving as grounds for the suspected payment of legal fees on behalf of another. The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency is currently investigating this allegation.

The claim that Mayor Kim's son did not actually work but merely lent his name has fueled controversy over fraudulent salary payments.

It was revealed that Kim Chul-woo's son visited the company representative, who was incarcerated for unpaid wages, leading to further suspicions. This sparked speculation that it might have been an attempt to silence him during the local election period.

Concerns are mounting over the ethical issues of local government heads in the Honam region who were elected after being nominated by the Democratic Party. Including the case of Mayor Kim Chul-woo, criticism of the nomination process and vetting system is escalating.
