Philippines Warns China: Block Skies, Face Allies

Tensions in the South China Sea are increasingly extending beyond encounters between Coast Guard ships, fishing vessels, and naval forces. The conflict, previously concentrated on maritime incidents, is now moving into the airspace, introducing new dimensions of potential confrontation. Military aircraft interactions pose significant risks for escalation, highlighting airspace as a critical new flashpoint in the region.

For the Philippines, one of the most serious scenarios would be an attempt by China to restrict aircraft operating over parts of the South China Sea, particularly through the declaration of an air defense identification zone, or ADIZ. Manila views any such restrictions as interference with lawful international flights. The potential declaration of an ADIZ by China is a major concern for the Philippines.

Philippine National Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. has made clear that his government would oppose such a move and could coordinate its response with other countries that share Manila's interpretation of international law. Secretary Teodoro Jr. emphasized that the Philippines rejects restrictive air measures and plans to involve allies in its response. This approach highlights a unified front with countries sharing Manila's view on international law.
