China Demands BRP Sierra Madre Removal, Philippines Refuses

The latest political pressure intensified on August 27th, 2026, when Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, renewed Beijing's demand that Manila remove the ship. Ayungin Shoal, known as Ren'ai Jiao in China, is home to the BRP Sierra Madre, which has been grounded there since 1999.

This vessel functions as an active Philippine military outpost, and its personnel are dependent on regular resupply missions to sustain their presence.

Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang of China's Ministry of National Defense stated that the Philippine side should tow away the BRP Sierra Madre LT57, claiming it is illegally grounded at China's Ren'ai Jiao, and cease all provocative acts. China has also issued warnings against any construction or the establishment of permanent facilities at the shoal.

Beijing indicated it would take action under Chinese laws if its demands are not met.

Manila maintains that Ayungin Shoal is a low-tide elevation situated within the Philippine exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, as defined by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The Philippines further cites a 2016 arbitral award which affirmed its sovereign rights within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

China, however, rejects the 2016 arbitral award and disputes the Philippines' claims, asserting its own historical rights over the area.

Philippine officials, including Ma. Teresa Lazaro, clarified that the agreement regarding resupply missions is solely for information exchange and does not constitute a request for permission. This mechanism has facilitated 16 resupply missions over two years.

The arrangement was put in place to reduce misunderstandings and avoid unnecessary escalation during critical resupply operations to the BRP Sierra Madre.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has clearly stated his commitment to not ceding any Philippine territory to a foreign power, affirming that he will not preside over any process that abandons even one square inch. Marcos seeks to balance this firmness with diplomatic approaches.

His administration aims to avoid unnecessary escalation or miscalculation in the South China Sea, while steadfastly upholding the nation's territorial integrity.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines reported that a Chinese Coast Guard member struck a Philippine Navy sailor on the head with a wooden baton, causing injury to the sailor.

This incident also resulted in damage to a Philippine rubber boat, exacerbating the already tense situation in the disputed waters. Beijing, however, disputes the Philippine account of the confrontation, offering a different narrative of the events.
