The Curious Case of the Infinite Sum Resulting in -1/12
Adding all positive integers, such as 1 plus 2 plus 3 plus 4 and so on, conventionally results in infinity.
However, through careful mathematical methods, it is possible to derive a finite value of -1/12 from this seemingly infinite series, a concept central to advanced physics rather than a simple trick, according to host Matt O'Dowd.
Add up every positive whole number, 1 plus 2 plus 3+ 4, etc., and eventually you get infinity. And yet, if you do some careful mathematical trickery, a very different number appears, minus a 12th.
