The research team has recently modified Quinoindoline (QDI) to shift its absorption maximum from 780 nanometers to around 760 nanometers. This adjustment, achieved through bromine substitution, aims to optimize the material's interaction with specific light wavelengths. Despite this improvement, strong fluorescence remains a challenge, as it leads to undesirable energy loss that impacts overall efficiency.

To ensure outdoor durability, a core-shell structure is proposed as a vital protective mechanism for the active core material. UV absorbers and antioxidants, while protecting the bulk polymer, inadvertently trigger photo-induced electron transfer (PET), leading to the degradation of the core material. A shell approximately 1 nanometer thick is deemed necessary to effectively block this electron attack and safeguard the active components. Previous attempts at cosmetic applications faced limitations due to low concentration requirements, highlighting the need for robust encapsulation in practical uses.

The required lifetime of films significantly influences the concentration of UV absorbers. For instance, agricultural greenhouse films demand a durability of three to seven years, necessitating higher UV absorber levels. However, increasing UV absorber concentration, while extending the polymer's life, can negatively impact the internal active material. Conversely, applications with a shorter lifespan, such as one year, might allow for a reduction in UV absorber content, thereby mitigating stability trade-offs and optimizing material performance for specific use cases.

The collaborators have decided to strategically involve Andreas in the patent application stage for their anti-icing technology, rather than the initial development phase. This approach aims to streamline current development while ensuring future intellectual property protection. Furthermore, a business strategy to split commercial territories by continent has been agreed upon, aiming to optimize market penetration and operational efficiency for the new technology.

The team has opted for extrusion over injection molding as the preferred method for producing the anti-icing films. Extrusion is deemed essential, particularly for creating the master batch, a critical intermediate step in the manufacturing process. The target thickness for the final film product has been set at 100 micrometers, ensuring optimal performance characteristics for the intended applications.

For small-scale testing, the target concentration for the IR dye has been standardized at 50 to 100 parts per million (ppm). This translates to a calculated requirement of approximately 40 milligrams of dye to achieve a 1% concentration in test samples. It was confirmed that 1 gram of pure dye would be sufficient for these experimental needs, allowing for consistent and reproducible testing of the material's properties.

The development of agricultural films prioritizes high transparency, with a target haze value below 1, ensuring minimal light scattering. Simultaneously, a broad absorption range covering the entire near-infrared region, from 700 to 2,500 nanometers, is required to optimize heat retention and other photothermal properties. Inorganic absorbers were rejected for this application due to concerns about potential aggregation and the resulting cloudiness, which would compromise the desired transparency.

In the ongoing material selection process, B6 is being considered as a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional organic dyes. Beyond its ecological benefits, B6 also presents a significant cost advantage, being substantially cheaper as a raw material. The current market price for B6 powder is around 300, making it an economically attractive option for large-scale production.

The milling process for B6 material presents significant safety challenges, primarily due to the generation of hydrogen gas through oxidation during wet milling. This inherent danger in B6 production has led to the discontinuation of certain products and processes. The team acknowledges these risks and is exploring safer manufacturing alternatives to continue leveraging B6's benefits while mitigating hazards.

In the immediate next steps, Dr. Chen Li's students will concentrate their efforts on encapsulation techniques, responding to specific project requests. The team will provide the necessary materials to test various formulation possibilities and assess their stability. Triethanolamine has been specifically recommended as a safe additive for these stability tests, aiming to optimize the protective properties of the encapsulated materials.
