Mac Performance Bottleneck: File System Slows Down Development Workflows

Despite the premium hardware and user experience of MacBooks, significant performance issues are emerging when running agent-based development tasks. The core problem lies in file operations during agent workflows, which are unacceptably slow.

While the hardware itself is excellent, the software's performance, especially for development-specific tasks, is lagging, leading to considerable frustration.

A direct comparison of folder deletion speeds revealed a stark performance difference: deleting multiple folders from a project took over 35 seconds on a Mac. The same operation was completed in under 7 to 12 seconds on a Linux machine.

Notably, the Linux machine used for this test was not more powerful than the Mac, and the Mac's storage hardware is inherently faster than the Linux drive, indicating a software or file system-level inefficiency on the Mac.

Developers are facing increasing challenges with pull requests (PRs) that frequently exceed a thousand lines, often generated by AI. This massive volume makes it difficult to maintain confidence in the quality of the merged code.

While tools like CodeRabbit help to streamline the review process, they cannot entirely replace the need for human oversight and the challenges associated with sifting through such large code changes.

CodeRabbit introduces a new user interface feature called 'change stacks' that aims to improve pull request (PR) reviews. Instead of displaying code changes in alphabetical order, this new UI organizes them into logical categories.

This categorization significantly enhances clarity, especially for complex changes involving navigation and data-fetching logic, making it easier for developers to understand the structure and intent of the code modifications.

Even when PNPM installs leverage caches by linking to existing files, the process takes almost 35 seconds on a Mac.

In stark contrast, the same cached operations consistently complete in under 10 seconds on Linux. This significant disparity confirms that the underlying file system is the main culprit behind the observed slowness, hindering developer productivity.

The tests focused on cleaning and installation tasks, which are common in development workflows.

Results showed that the M1 Max took 31 seconds to clean and 44 seconds to install, representing a fivefold increase in time for deletions and a tenfold increase for installations compared to the Linux setup.

At its fundamental level, an SSD only stores binary data—ones and zeros—and has no inherent understanding of concepts like folders or files. A file system acts as a crucial abstraction layer, providing the illusion of an organized structure to users and applications.

This protocol is essential for tracking what data is stored, its meaning, how it's managed, rewritten, and linked, effectively translating human-understandable structures into low-level hardware operations.

File systems operate similarly to programming languages, where high-level instructions must ultimately map down to ones and zeros stored on the physical drive. The efficiency and performance of a file system depend on how this mapping is handled and the various layers of abstraction between the drive's raw content and the user's interface.

They are responsible for managing complex operations such as copying, moving, and linking files while ensuring data integrity and accessibility.

Modern file systems need to excel in various performance metrics critical for developer workflows. These include deletion speeds for cleaning up temporary files and project directories, and clone speeds essential for creating new work trees in version control systems.

Efficient indexing is also crucial for tools like system search and `ripgrep` to function effectively, while the management of small files remains a significant challenge for most file systems, often leading to performance bottlenecks.

Compression in modern storage systems involves multiple layers, impacting both physical storage space and runtime performance. While compression clearly offers benefits in saving disk space, its effect on performance is a separate consideration.

Measuring actual disk usage accurately is further complicated by advanced features like data linking and inherent compression, making it challenging to get a clear picture of true storage efficiency and I/O overhead.

The speaker expresses strong dissatisfaction with APFS, labeling it 'garbage' for agent-based development workflows, to the extent that such tasks are now rarely performed on a Mac. Btrfs was considered as an alternative due to its advanced features but was ultimately dismissed because of its poor performance with large batches of small file copies.

Currently, ext4 is favored for its raw small-file write performance, despite its lack of efficient copy-on-write primitives. This preference highlights the critical need for a file system that prioritizes developer-specific performance requirements over general-purpose design.

This layer, the file system, stores filenames and corresponding pointers that indicate where different data blocks are located on the storage medium.

When a file is copied, the file system typically allocates new, available blocks on the disk to store the duplicated data, and updates its metadata to reflect the new file's location and name.

XFS is recognized for its high extensibility, making it suitable for specific enterprise environments.

ZFS and Btrfs are feature-rich options that offer advanced data integrity and snapshot capabilities, but they are primarily designed and optimized for complex RAID configurations and enterprise storage solutions rather than typical desktop use.

APFS consumed approximately 240 megabytes for the work tree. In contrast, Btrfs used only about 14 megabytes, a substantial reduction likely attributable to its compression capabilities.

XFS, when used with VDO (Virtual Data Optimizer), showed a usage of 128 megabytes. ZFS reported around 20 megabytes, although this result was met with some skepticism regarding its accuracy. Ext4 used roughly 250 megabytes, similar to APFS.

APFS demonstrated significantly poor performance for managing node_modules, with installs and cleanups collectively taking roughly 39 seconds. In stark contrast, ext4 completed the cleanup in 2.5 seconds and the install in about 9 seconds, highlighting a severe performance gap.

XFS also performed considerably better, taking 7 seconds for cleanup and 9.5 seconds for install. VDO, when implemented with XFS, showed comparable performance metrics in these specific benchmarks, consistently outperforming APFS.

A simple git work tree clone, which takes around 100 seconds on a Mac, can be completed in just 10 seconds on a basic Ubuntu installation.

This translates to substantial efficiency gains in daily tasks; what previously took 10-12 seconds on a Mac now finishes in under 2 seconds on a Linux environment. Such large time differences accumulate over a day, severely affecting developer productivity and making the Mac experience noticeably slower for intensive tasks.

On a Linux setup, these operations are executed almost instantaneously, providing a fluid and responsive developer experience.

However, performing the same exact requests on a MacBook, even without network hops, results in significant latency and prolonged cloning times. The observed delays indicate that macOS struggles with these types of intensive file operations, underscoring its inefficiency for agentic workflows.

To address the performance bottlenecks encountered on Mac, the speaker has transitioned the majority of their daily coding workflow to a dedicated Linux box on their home network. This setup leverages XFS with video compression, resulting in a significantly improved and more responsive development environment.

This optimization has also led to remarkable storage efficiency gains, with 1 terabyte of raw data being compressed down to just 360 gigabytes. The move to a Linux home server with XFS and compression has proven to be a highly effective solution for enhancing both performance and storage management.
