RM on Balance, Identity, and His Solo Journey

RM maintains that his influence must be rooted in his current personal life and experiences, not just the pursuit of numbers or mainstream trends. He asserts that inspiration should stem from real-life interactions and influences.

The artist describes feeling constant pressure to chase metrics and adapt to mainstream tastes, a challenge he actively tries to counteract.

He strives to distance himself from the fast-paced, digital consumption culture, aiming for a more grounded approach to his artistic output and personal life.

Conversely, his mother encouraged stability and safety, advising him not to challenge too much and to remain in a secure zone. RM describes himself as a 'clock pin' oscillating between these differing outlooks, ultimately learning balance from them.

He encountered a world of black silhouettes and sculptures that deeply impacted him.

This experience led him to realize the vast and complex spectrum within the color black, fundamentally changing his perception of color and design.

He admits he struggled to accept this duality in his twenties, believing he needed a singular, defined 'edge' to his persona.

RM now understands that identity is not monolithic but rather a complex composition of contradictions and dualities.

RM admitted to a significant decrease in his reading habits due to the constant interruptions of social media.

He finds it increasingly challenging to engage with long-form content like books and films, often feeling bored by them. He considers the act of going to a theater and putting his phone on airplane mode a modern luxury.

RM credits Hermann Hesse's 'Demian' for helping him process complex emotions like jealousy during his youth. He related to the depiction of a seemingly 'perfect' individual grappling with human flaws, seeing reflections of his own school life.

The book provided comfort and a framework for understanding his feelings towards peers who were tall, handsome, smart, or popular, reinforcing the importance of his parents taking him to the library every weekend.

RM described his early leadership style during the first 8-9 years of BTS as 'overwhelming' and 'bossy.' He learned that this approach became unsustainable as the group members matured and developed their own careers.

He consciously shifted his communication style to be more collaborative, defining modern leadership as taking on the 'annoying but necessary' tasks for the collective good, likening it to closing a window.

RM identifies himself as the person who undertakes these essential tasks because he finds it difficult to watch others struggle with them, prioritizing the team's collective well-being.

RM felt a profound personal need to 'get away' from his established role and demanding schedule before his military service.

He admitted becoming 'too lazy' to deeply engage with the art world outside his public persona, realizing that his constant busyness was an excuse.

Working with photographer Wing Shya was a deliberate effort to shed his 'nervous' state and embrace a more relaxed, uninhibited creative process.

The album's title, 'Right Place, Wrong Person,' reflects a universal feeling of being an outsider or a sense of displacement in contemporary life.

No Brain earns high praise from RM for their raw punk energy, while he identifies Kim Chang-wan as a pivotal legend whose psychedelic style rivals that of Kim Gordon.

He introduced Kim Chang-wan as a legendary figure in Korean music history, comparing his psychedelic style to that of Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon.

RM explicitly recommended these artists to listeners interested in exploring the foundational and influential acts within Korean music.

RM looks back at his 2013-2014 fashion choices with irony, particularly a memorable outfit involving pink socks and donuts with a T-shirt.

While he initially disliked his past style, he now appreciates it as a reminder of his younger, more 'pure' self, realizing that strong dislike often signals an underlying interest.

When overwhelmed by the pressures of human interaction and the need for constant stimulation, RM turns to the mountains, rivers, and the sea as his primary 'teachers and therapists.'

He acknowledged his personal struggle with obsession in human relationships and the difficulty of embracing solitude, often needing constant stimulation.

For RM, mountains provide a crucial 'hill' or anchor when he feels overwhelmed, offering a necessary retreat for mental well-being.

RM admitted that his recent musical work openly reflects a state of confusion and a struggle to reach a clear, unified artistic vision.

Despite pressures for straightforwardness, he finds value in the 'shaking' and conflicts that arise, positioning himself in 2026 as still navigating this confusion while striving for certainty.

He admitted to over-analyzing the balance between the need for rest and the constant demands of work, grappling with guilt when not being productive.

A friend advised him against merging his public pop star persona with his private life, emphasizing the importance of separate spheres for mental well-being.

RM expressed an attraction to individuals who possess contradictory qualities, such as being both very serious and very humorous at the same time.

He has moved beyond judging people solely by their fashion choices, now valuing individual taste as a genuine form of self-expression and believing that duality is key to a happy, long-term life.

He realized that the more he fixated on being normal, the further that concept seemed to slip away from him.

Consequently, he is now actively trying to cease thinking about normality altogether, accepting his distinct path.

RM emphasized the increasing importance of privacy and the ability to move through life unnoticed, which he believes is fundamental to his well-being.

RM noted that despite conducting thousands of interviews throughout his career, this particular podcast felt unique due to its intimate format of 'bumping into somebody's home and talking.'

He described the conversation as one of the deepest, most honest, and happiest interviews he has ever experienced, highlighting the genuine connection established.
