The legendary manager discusses his new memoir, health challenges, and enduring philosophies in an interview with BBC News.
Sir Alex Ferguson's memoir, "Games of My Life," is structured around 21 matches personally chosen by him for their significance, reflecting moments from his earliest days in football up to his retirement.
The book covers his extensive career spanning from the age of 13, highlighting that his professional journey extended well beyond his celebrated time at Manchester United.
The overwhelming support from the crowd and the club owners, however, deeply moved both Ferguson and his wife, who accompanied him.
Oh, it was that was I was terrified, actually. I wish I I wish I I could say it was comfortable. I wasn't.
Ferguson's recovery from his brain hemorrhage lasted eight months, during which he was unable to travel or speak.
A therapist helped him regain his voice through exercises like naming birds, animals, and rivers, a process Ferguson emphasized as crucial after the frightening experience of losing his ability to communicate.
Sir Alex Ferguson pinpoints his 1955 Govan High School cup final, a 6-0 victory where he scored two goals, as the moment he first realized the enjoyment of winning medals.
He recalled his modest upbringing in Adelphi Terrace, where his parents slept in a recess bed in the kitchen, and remembered his father, despite being critical of his playing style, showing support by 'breaking in' his new leather boots.
In 1963, a frustrated Sir Alex Ferguson contemplated quitting football to move to Canada, feeling disheartened by his status on the reserve team.
He admitted to faking an illness to skip practice, an act followed by him scoring a hat-trick the next day, which became a turning point that led him to caution others against missing potentially life-altering opportunities.
Ferguson's management philosophy at Manchester United heavily relied on trusting young talents, exemplified by players like Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, and David Beckham.
He emphasized that giving opportunities to young players often leads to them becoming loyal stars, a belief stemming from his experiences at Aberdeen and St Mirren.
He clarified that David Beckham was placed in a separate room not to push him out, but due to his physical development, indicating the care taken in nurturing young players.
Sir Alex Ferguson faced significant criticism and even threatening letters from fans after his decision to sell Paul Ince to Inter Milan.
He explained that the sale, for 7.5 million pounds, was made to create space for emerging youth players, underscoring that making difficult decisions is an inherent part of a manager's role, with some choices inevitably proving unpopular.
Ferguson shared insights from a personal notepad, revealing a stream of consciousness outlining his management philosophy, which included keywords such as 'preparation,' 'instinct,' 'determination,' and 'authority.'
The list also featured references to historical figures like Winston Churchill and Bernard Montgomery, serving as a constant reminder of the qualities he believed were essential for his role at the club.
