SK Hynix makes historic decision to repurchase 40 trillion won in shares
Jump to 5:56SK Hynix decided to repurchase and cancel 40 trillion won in shares. Manager Jo Ki-jun evaluated it as "a situation where Chairman Chey Tae-won's strong will is clearly evident."
This is the first time in Hynix's history. With operating profit of 70-97 trillion won and net profit exceeding 110 trillion won through Q2, the company has sufficient capacity. The buyback will proceed over three months, with potential to take advantage of stock price declines.
The scale differs from Samsung Electronics' share buyback history. Samsung's buybacks in 2015 and 2017 were each 10-11 trillion won, but Hynix is now investing 40 trillion at once. While Samsung purchased at low prices of 60,000-100,000 won per share back then, semiconductor companies today purchasing at high prices of 250,000-300,000 won per share demonstrates strong resolve.
