Piddington votes to leave UK over migrant housing plan

The military camp that will host the asylum seekers sits about a mile from Piddington. This means the village's population will be more than tripled by the arrival of migrants—a ratio that will far exceed anything residents expected or consented to.

The Home Office has said it has saved taxpayers over a billion pounds on asylum support costs since the election. Officials defend the military base as a suitable location because it allows them to monitor who is coming and leaving, and centralizing people in one place is presented as a better arrangement than dispersing them across multiple towns.

French lifeboats were present at the launch points, and multiple boats were waiting in queue to depart for the UK—visible evidence of the ongoing flow of arrivals that the Piddington housing plan is designed to accommodate.

The ballot asked: "I support Pittington seeking to succeed from the United Kingdom and pursuing self-determination." Voters could mark yes or no. Will Godley, reporting from the site, explained the context to voters: the 1,256 asylum seekers planned for the military camp one mile away, and the 7:00 p.m. voting deadline.

Godley was explicit about what the referendum did—and did not—do. The ballot had no legal power to remove Piddington from the United Kingdom. It was, by design, a symbolic gesture: a statement that Piddington was not happy with the asylum seeker plans and saw no other way to make the government listen.

Herby Owen had lived in Piddington for three decades. His father fought in World War II for the United Kingdom. When it came time to vote in the referendum, Owen cast his ballot to leave.

He called the government's decision disrespectful to the war dead. No government official or Labour MP had gotten in touch with residents to explain the plan or hear their concerns. Owen put it plainly: "I voted to leave the United Kingdom. They're not honoring the war dead and the people that fought in this country. That's how I feel. The government in power, the Labour party in power, all those MPs and the prime minister, no one's actually replied to us. No one's got in touch with us."

His vote was as much an expression of abandonment as a protest. After 33 years, the country no longer felt like it belonged to him.

Herby Owen said the only way to delay or stop the process was a judicial review—taking the government to court. But that path has a barrier: residents must fund the legal challenge themselves. Owen described it as disgraceful that citizens have to pay to challenge decisions made by the government that is supposed to represent them.

He framed the stakes beyond the village. This was not just a local issue, he said—it was "the battle of Great Britain."

Owen accused migrants of ruining lives wherever they were placed—in camps, in houses in multiple occupancy (HMOs), and in towns. He questioned whether the government understood the damage. "Wherever they go into the towns, they're ruining people's lives. If this government doesn't understand that, I just think what planet are they living on?" The statement was his explanation for why the referendum felt necessary—it was a last resort to break through what he saw as willful government blindness.

Owen explained why residents chose a referendum instead of another march or protest: traditional activism becomes "yesterday's news" instantly. By holding a referendum—even a symbolic one—Piddington created something novel enough to cut through the noise and get coverage. "You can do marches. You can do this. You can do that. And you're yesterday's news. You're not today's news. We've created that much," Owen said.

The cost of a judicial review compounds the residents' sense of abandonment. They have to raise the money themselves to take their own government—the government that represents them—to court. "We've got to raise the funds to take our government to court who represent us. I mean, why is that? That's actually disgraceful," Owen said.

Owen made a grave charge: the Labour government would be "complicit in the crimes that these people are going to commit all over our country." He said migrants would be admitted to the country with only face recognition and fingerprints, then allowed to walk freely across the UK and Ireland with minimal oversight. Residents felt their MPs were ignoring warnings—"burying their heads in the sand"—about what Owen believed was inevitable harm.

The accusation went beyond policy disagreement. It framed the government's decision not as misguided but as morally culpable for crimes he predicted would follow.

Herby's wife Jennifer described waking at 3:00 every morning thinking about the camp. "I wake up about 3:00 every morning thinking about it. It's just it's just a disgrace," she said. The plan had invaded her sleep.

Women of Piddington wrote to female MPs in Parliament and organized visits. Two Reform MPs and two Conservative MPs came to the Jubilee Reserve to see the conditions for themselves. Jennifer Owen said the Conservative MPs were "absolutely gobsmacked" with what they saw when residents showed them the back of the camp and the fields where the asylum seekers would be housed.

The shock registered on their faces suggested either ignorance or misrepresentation of the site in government briefings. Conservative and Reform politicians from outside the area had not grasped what was actually being proposed.

Jennifer Owen described a scenario where the migrant camp would functionally confine the female and elderly population of Piddington. Women and children would not be able to walk the streets alone for their safety. Elderly residents would be confined to their houses and gardens, afraid to go out if they saw migrants on the street. The housing plan, in this account, would transform a quiet village into a place where whole classes of residents—women, children, seniors—would lose the freedom to move about their own community.

Jennifer Owen catalogued the species at risk on the proposed camp site: 12 species of bats roosting there, crested newts, hazel dormice, about 100 bird species, and 118 species of wild flowers. One—devil's-bit scabious—had a county-level protection order. Before any construction could proceed, Owen said, there should be a full professional ecological survey.

The detail mattered. If the site contained protected species, environmental law might require surveys and mitigation before construction could begin. It was a legal and procedural tool that residents had identified to slow or obstruct the housing plan.

The Home Office said its asylum housing policy was working to fairly house asylum seekers across the country. Officials claimed they had already saved taxpayers one billion pounds. But residents disputed the fairness of placing over 1,000 migrants in a village of under 400 people. For the Home Office, dispersal was rational and economical. For Piddington, it felt like the village had been chosen to absorb a burden no consultation had preceded.

Will Godley's closing statement crystallized the arithmetic that residents found unacceptable: Piddington has fewer than 400 residents. The government plans to house over 1,000 male migrants there. The migrant population will be more than triple the village's own population. It was not dispersion; it was concentration of a population three times the size of the host community into a single location. That ratio became the symbol of what residents saw as a deliberate, disproportionate burden placed on their village without consent or consultation.
