Xiaomi 18 Pro Max: An iPhone Challenger

The previous model, the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, was widely recognized as one of the best phones of 2025, setting high expectations for this iteration.

The new device maintains a design language and feature set that will be familiar to current iPhone users, ensuring a smooth potential transition for those considering a switch. Marques Brownlee observed, "If one-upping the iPhone was a sport, Xiaomi would be Lebron James."

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max introduces a new privacy display mode that effectively hides screen contents from side viewing angles, preventing prying eyes. This feature is reminiscent of a similar technology previously seen on the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Additionally, a 'gaze detection' feature utilizes the front camera to alert users if another person is looking at their screen. This system can be configured to activate automatically for specific applications or when in certain locations, enhancing user security and privacy.

This processor boasts cores capable of hitting impressive 5 GHz clock speeds.

Benchmark tests indicate a substantial 15-20% performance improvement over the previous generation of chips. Marques Brownlee highlighted its power, stating, "Basically a flagship processor we're going to start seeing in a bunch of the highest-end phones for the next year. And yeah, on paper this chip is a beast."

Complementing the powerful chip, the phone includes 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, further solidifying its high-performance credentials. Despite the technical prowess, the naming conventions for Qualcomm chips often lead to confusion.

Marques Brownlee noted the industry trend towards larger capacities, remarking, "These numbers are just getting ridiculous now."

Advances in silicon density have enabled manufacturers to fit larger battery capacities within similar form factors. The smartphone industry is now seeing devices approach 9,000 to 10,000 mAh capacities, though high numbers do not inherently guarantee the best real-world battery life.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max maintains a physical SIM tray while remaining competitive in weight compared to its iPhone counterpart. It comes with a 100-watt charger included in the box, providing a complete charging solution.

The silicon-carbon battery technology allows for extremely rapid charging, achieving a 12% to 25% charge in just five minutes at 80 watts. The phone also supports 50-watt wireless charging and reverse wireless charging, effectively transforming the device into a portable battery bank for other devices.

The device features a new 200-megapixel main camera and an equally impressive 200-megapixel telephoto camera. The telephoto sensor is notably large, matching the dimensions often found in primary camera sensors.

This high megapixel count provides significant cropability, even with a 3.2x optical zoom. The camera system supports Leica color profiles, 8K video recording, and includes a unique rear-display viewfinder for high-quality selfies, making use of the powerful main cameras. Marques Brownlee stated, "It's a new 200-megapixel main camera, a new 200-megapixel telephoto camera, and this down here is a 50-megapixel ultrawide..."

While the high hardware specifications of the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max are impressive, the reviewer emphasizes that software optimization remains a critical factor for overall user satisfaction. The numbers alone do not always translate directly into a superior user experience.

Xiaomi has the potential to combine its raw hardware horsepower with the smoothness and refined experience typically associated with the iPhone. Marques Brownlee noted, "it's not always the numbers that make the big difference, it's the experience."

This ensures that privacy is achieved without a significant compromise in image quality.

The display specifically obscures only horizontal viewing angles, leaving vertical angles unaffected. To counteract any potential image quality trade-offs, the panel achieves a peak brightness of 4000 nits. The reviewer found the placement of this feature within privacy settings, rather than display settings, to be somewhat unintuitive. Marques Brownlee explained, "Xiaomi is doing it a bit differently here with what they're calling HyperRGB. Basically, they have the complete red, green, and blue subpixel array for every pixel."

A single press activates the Xiao AI memory feature, rather than allowing users to define their preferred applications.

While long-press options include launching voice notes, silent mode, Do Not Disturb, or a privacy display, the reviewer expressed a strong desire for more customization and freedom in mapping the button's functions. Brownlee said, "So this button to Xiaomi is specifically an AI button. So a press of this button can either do nothing or add whatever you're doing to the Xiao AI memory, which I obviously don't use."

The camera rings on the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max are now flush with the back glass, which improves ergonomics and facilitates easier swipes across the device. Hidden speakers under the screen create a distinct sound profile that makes audio feel as though it is facing away from the user.

The back screen offers practical features such as a desk calendar, a step counter, and even virtual pets, providing a level of utility and personalization distinct from Apple's design philosophy. Marques Brownlee commented, "That back screen is still as useful as ever... the whole back screen thing feels like something we'll probably never see on an iPhone."

The primary camera of the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max maintains the large, high-quality performance established by its predecessor. However, the zoom camera stands out as a major, highly engaging upgrade, inspiring users to frequently utilize its capabilities. Marques Brownlee noted, "But the zoom camera's big upgrade... is something else. Like phones like this that have an amazing zoom camera just make me want to go take tons of zoom photos all the time."

In contrast, the ultrawide lens is described as somewhat of an afterthought when compared to the impressive main and telephoto modules. Beyond the camera, the AI assistant is well-integrated into the broader Xiaomi ecosystem, extending its functionality across smart appliances and vehicles.

Xiaomi employs a deliberate strategy to make the transition as comfortable as possible for iPhone users by mirroring key features and aesthetic elements. The aesthetics and stock app designs are intentionally similar to iOS, reducing the learning curve for switchers.

The phone incorporates elements such as a 'Dynamic Island' equivalent and quick controls accessible from the top right corner, directly mimicking familiar iPhone functionalities. This approach aims to provide everything offered on the 'other side of the fence,' as Marques Brownlee described, thereby enticing users to switch.
