Iran Warns Korea on Hormuz Deployment

The South Korean government is in a situation where Iran's message will inevitably deepen its concerns about the deployment decision. Iran's warning suggests that it can have a real impact on South Korea's security and foreign policy, beyond mere pressure.

This was a strategic move by former President Park Chung-hee to deliberately voice opposition to deployment through a ruling party lawmaker, thereby maximizing South Korea's national interests at the negotiating table with the United States. This anecdote is regarded as an example of political astuteness in maximizing national interests amidst diplomatic difficulties.

Creating domestic opposition through ruling party lawmakers, as seen here, was not mere manipulation of public opinion but a sophisticated political strategy to strengthen diplomatic bargaining power and maximize national interests. This contrasts with a foolish dictator who solely pursues control, characterizing a smart dictator.

The speaker emphasized, "Whether it's the U.S. or Iran, either side is in a situation where they need to offer something to South Korea for Korea to make a decision favorable to them," arguing that South Korea can secure diplomatic gains from a mediating position.

In conclusion, South Korea must leverage its deployment decision to exert negotiating power to gain more from both the U.S. and Iran. This suggests the need for strategic thinking that, rather than succumbing to external pressure, uses it to promote the nation's long-term interests.

In the current international situation, South Korean diplomacy should no longer be biased towards a specific country, it is argued. The speaker stated, "The world of only looking at the U.S. is over. We must also look at Russia, China, and Japan," emphasizing the necessity of a diversified diplomatic strategy.

This means exploring new diplomatic approaches to resume North Korea-U.S. dialogue and create momentum for peace on the Korean Peninsula. South Korea should not only adhere to the U.S. position but also expand its diplomatic options and pursue national stability and prosperity through relationships with various stakeholders.
