Cornell Alleged Gang Rape Case Reopened

The investigation centers on allegations that the accuser, identified as Jane Doe, was drugged and raped by multiple individuals at a fraternity house over several hours, leading to a civil lawsuit filed on September 16. Cornell University has since banned the involved fraternity chapter from campus and stated its support for the grand jury process.

Seven members of a fraternity and the university itself are named as defendants in the litigation, which describes a night of abuse beginning with the administration of substances.

According to the lawsuit, the victim, visibly intoxicated, stumbled into the fraternity house to see a friend and was then pressured by two fraternity members into snorting ketamine and given other drugs and alcohol before being sexually assaulted. A Snapchat message was reportedly sent to a fraternity group at 1:42 a.m. offering the victim for sex, with the assault lasting until 5:45 a.m. The victim's attorney notes that none of the accused men have yet been arrested by law enforcement.

Attorneys representing the victim claim that only two of the seven alleged attackers were expelled, while others received lesser punishments such as writing essays.

This criticism comes after initial investigations by Cornell police and prosecutors previously concluded that criminal charges were not appropriate, though Cornell University disputes claims that it failed to impose consequential punishments on the individuals involved.

Tracy Vitz of the nonprofit 'It's on Us' describes the incident as a symptom of a larger systemic problem within college campuses.
