Stallone's 'The Steps': From Zoo Cleaner to Hollywood Star

The memoir provides a candid account of his challenges and triumphs, highlighting the evolution of his career in Hollywood. It also touches upon his renowned rivalry with Arnold Schwarzenegger, a significant aspect of his professional life.

Stallone described the process of writing the memoir as a profound experience, likening it to a return to the boxing ring.

Sylvester Stallone explained his belief that dialogue is not merely casual conversation but a precisely structured element in storytelling. He views it as a mathematical composition, where every word serves a deliberate purpose.

This precision is crucial, according to Stallone, for ensuring that audiences remain deeply connected to the characters and the narrative. He emphasized that carefully chosen words are essential for effective engagement.

The job involved cleaning the cages while the lions were still inside, creating a dangerous and high-stakes environment. This early experience highlighted his determination and willingness to take on challenging roles to survive.

Stallone often introduced himself by this unusual occupation, reflecting on its impact on his early life.

Stallone recounts the hardships of living in a 2x2 meter hotel room, a period during which he washed his clothes in shared showers to avoid public laundromats. Unable to afford a laundromat, he developed a unique method for cleaning his clothes.

He utilized the shared shower facility in his building to wash his garments, avoiding the cost and the isolating experience of public laundromats, especially during the freezing winter months. Stallone noted that laundromats were not places where one could easily make friends or build community.

Sylvester Stallone recounted a significant incident from his youth where he was frequently targeted for fights, leading to a violent confrontation in a church. A gang leader challenged him to a 'five-hit' contest.

After initially walking away, Stallone felt regret and returned to defend himself. This decision led to him being shot in the tricep with a homemade 'zip-gun'.

The experience, though harrowing, profoundly shaped his perspective on the importance of action over regret, influencing his life choices from that point forward.

Sylvester Stallone clarified that the unusual haircutting incident occurred while he was working at a deli, distinct from his church encounter. A local gang leader insisted that Stallone cut his hair to match his own style.

Despite having only cuticle scissors and no proper tools, Stallone performed the haircut. The result was a 'chopped' and messy look, yet surprisingly, the gang leader expressed satisfaction with the outcome.

At a young age, Sylvester Stallone was expelled from multiple schools and exhibited symptoms now recognized as ADHD. A test at the Drexel Institute of Technology identified him as exceptionally creative but lacking in practical reliability, suggesting he might work as an electrician's assistant or a table sorter.

Stallone noted that his son later received a similar diagnosis, which he now understands as a 'learning difference' rather than a disability. This reinterpretation highlights the evolving understanding of such conditions.

The initial preview screening of 'Rocky' faced a dismal reception, with audiences confused and unimpressed by the film's tone. Studio executives were dismayed, considering downgrading the movie to a B-movie double feature and pulling it from wide release.

Stallone recounted witnessing studio bosses losing confidence as people walked out during the screening. To demonstrate the film's emotional impact, he screened it to students without the final boxing scenes, aiming to prove its resonance.

Mutual insecurity and psychological games fueled a bitter Hollywood feud between the two actors, leading Stallone to state, 'Nun, die Sache ist, wir haben uns gegenseitig so sehr gepusht, bis es beleidigend wurde.' This rivalry escalated to the point where they refused to dine in the same restaurants.

Despite the friction and insults exchanged through the media, Stallone acknowledged that this intense competition ultimately pushed both actors to work harder and achieve greater success within Hollywood.

Stallone intentionally cultivated a leaner, more 'serpent-like' screen persona.

This distinct characterization aimed to contrast with Schwarzenegger's formidable physical dominance and avoid direct overlap. Both stars actively sought to differentiate their on-screen presence.

Their strategic choices helped solidify their individual brands while collectively defining the action genre of that era.

Regarding the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain, the actor joked that they should have simply sourced burgers from competitors like Hard Rock Cafe, explaining, 'Wir hätten das Essen verbessern sollen.' He joked that they should have simply purchased burgers from their rivals.

Stallone's comments highlighted a critical flaw in the business model, suggesting that the celebrity appeal could not compensate for a lack of culinary excellence.

Stallone added a brother to the script, which transformed her into a suppressed woman and catalyzed a love story not present in the original draft, noting, 'Sie wurde lebendig, im Gegensatz dazu, dass er nur Geld eintrieb und mit ihr sprach. Und sie wurde, als ich einen schrecklichen Bruder hinzufügte, zu dieser wirklich unterdrückten Frau.' Stallone’s decision to add a 'terrible brother' to the script transformed her into a truly oppressed and complex woman.

This addition created depth, allowing Rocky to notice her hidden potential. This development led to the iconic love story that was not present in the original draft of the screenplay.

This was at a time when he had only $80 in his bank account.

He maintained his refusal because he had written the script specifically for himself to play the lead role. His partner, Sasha, provided crucial support during this period, encouraging him to 'stay tough' in his conviction.

This unwavering stance underscored his commitment to his artistic vision and his belief in his ability to embody the character.

Stallone initially feared the deal had fallen through, sensing the conversation's gravity.

Herbie, however, delivered the news that Stallone was indeed cast as Rocky. This confirmation caused Stallone to collapse to his knees in tears, overwhelmed by the culmination of his persistence.

He described the moment as a profound release, marking the beginning of his iconic career.

Sylvester Stallone fought to retain a critical scene in 'Rocky' where the protagonist admits to his fiancée that he doesn't expect to win the fight. This scene emphasizes the film's core message: true victory lies in simply remaining on his feet, rather than winning the match.

The production team initially wanted to cut the scene due to time constraints. However, Stallone considered it the most important part of the movie, arguing it defined Rocky's motivation and transformed him from a neighborhood loser to someone who is different than he thought.

He declared they were 'pulling the plug' and could not continue that night.

Sylvester Stallone, however, refused to leave, convinced that the scene's importance outweighed the schedule. He insisted on completing the take despite the limited window provided by the crew.

His determination ensured the completion of what he felt was a crucial moment for the film's emotional depth.

The film 'Rocky' received 10 Academy Award nominations, a remarkable achievement that the interviewer attributed to the raw emotion and heart of a particular scene that Stallone fought to keep. Stallone's commitment to the film's emotional integrity was a key factor in its critical success.

The production was also marked by complex family dynamics, including his father's insistence on a role in the film. While his mother was invited to the Oscars, she ultimately did not attend the ceremony.

As the interview concluded, Sylvester Stallone was informed that the interviewer's boss, Danny, was preparing for a boxing match scheduled for November 5th. Stallone offered a lighthearted comment, advising against judging people by their appearance.
