SpaceX Starship V3 Redesign: Three Grid Fins

Everyday Astronaut's Tim Dodd explained the function and purpose of grid fins, highlighting their role in steering and guiding a vehicle in the atmosphere, similar to an all-moving fin or rudder.

One of the previous four grid fins often operated within the rocket's turbulent wake during re-entry, significantly limiting its effectiveness.

By reducing the number of fins to three, SpaceX can make the remaining fins larger, resulting in a lighter booster with better overall control authority, a modification described as a win-win for performance.

Grid fins are aerodynamic control surfaces that steer and guide a vehicle in the atmosphere, functioning similarly to rudders but broken up into a grid structure.

Initially designed for missiles and bombs due to their ability to fold, grid fins were also used passively for stability on the Soviet N1 rocket, while SpaceX uses them for active guidance, retracting them during ascent to reduce drag.

Pitch is controlled by the unison movement of two horizontal grid fins, yaw by vertical fins, and roll by opposing pairs moving in opposite directions.

Falcon 9 boosters leverage atmospheric resistance during re-entry to slow down, reducing the fuel needed for landing burns and freeing up more propellant for ascent, thereby increasing total vehicle performance.

Ailerons function primarily by deflecting airflow to induce roll, yet this process generates parasitic drag that pulls the wing backward to create adverse yaw.

The B2 stealth bomber utilizes split ailerons to control yaw via drag, compensating for its lack of a vertical stabilizer, a design choice that also reduces its radar signature.

Grid fins require smaller actuators than traditional designs due to their shorter effective chord length, allowing them to handle less aerodynamic torque at high angles of attack and perform effectively at hypersonic speeds.

SpaceX has continued to evolve its grid fin technology, introducing serrated teeth on Falcon 9 fins in 2017 to manage the transonic phase by disrupting local sound speed, an approach that differs from competitors like Blue Origin.

Unlike the retractable Falcon 9 fins, Starship's fins remain permanently extended, a design choice that eliminates the mass of a deployment mechanism, offsetting the aerodynamic drag due to the Super Heavy booster's immense weight.

Starship Version 3 also integrates tower catch pins directly into the grid fins, streamlining operations by eliminating the need for separate hardware used in previous versions.

SpaceX removed the fourth grid fin primarily because it was less effective during re-entry, particularly at high angles of attack where its position on top of the booster caused it to sit mostly in the vehicle's wake.

The company compensated for this by enlarging the remaining three fins, which is the minimum number required to effectively manage pitch, yaw, and roll, thus maintaining critical control authority.

This new design enables a pair of grid fins to be positioned 180 degrees apart, facilitating more effective pitch control and enhancing the booster's overall aerodynamic performance.

Integrating catch points directly into the side fins necessitated the removal of the fourth fin to prevent interference with the launch tower's catch arms, a constraint that was less prominent in V1 and V2 designs due to closer fin spacing.

This internal trimming allows the side fins to remain closer to a neutral position, preserving their ability to manage mixed control inputs simultaneously for roll and pitch.
