Taiwan to Send First Coast Guard Mission to Philippines

The Philippines established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China on June 9, 1975, under a joint communiqué, effectively ending its formal relations with Taiwan.

Despite this diplomatic shift, unofficial economic and cultural links between the Philippines and Taiwan have remained active, with the last comparable visit by the ROC Navy to the Philippines occurring in 1974.

Officials are presenting the proposed 2027 voyage as a professional and goodwill exchange, distinctly not as a military deployment.

Beyond diplomatic aims, the mission provides extended deployment experience for students and personnel while serving a technical goal of assessing patrol vessel stability, navigation, and equipment integration on long voyages.

Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration confirmed on September 17, 2026, the transfer of one of its retired vessels as a donation to the Philippines.
