Key factors contributing to this leverage include the Venezuela oil deal, which diminishes China's energy and influence footprint in the Western Hemisphere, and new Arctic security pacts between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland, which are designed to counter Chinese expansionism in the High North. Furthermore, China is experiencing broader strategic setbacks, including a weakening relationship with Iran and Russia's prolonged military engagement in Ukraine.

China maintains a significant defensive advantage despite experiencing recent economic losses. The nation retains control over key sectors, specifically in the rare earth market and global shipbuilding industry.

These industries provide China with substantial leverage in the international arena. The country exerts authority through its dominance in these critical supply and production chains.

Iran's economy is heavily reliant on China, with approximately 90% of its exports directed to Beijing, making China its sole major customer, Captain Brent Sadler (ret.) explained. This dependency creates a critical vulnerability that the United States can exploit.

U.S. efforts to pressure China into limiting trade with Iran effectively accelerate the impact of existing economic sanctions. Economic measures, like those advocated by Scott Bessant and Secretary Hegseth, are designed to hasten a resolution regarding the Iranian regime by increasing its financial strain.

The United States must maintain its focus on the Cuban regime and ensure that pressure is not relieved until significant changes occur within the authoritarian government. The loss of Venezuela's support represents a crucial blow to the regime's financial lifeline, weakening its stability.

Even in the face of widespread blackouts and severe shortages across the island, the U.S. strategy calls for sustained pressure on Cuba. This consistent approach aims to maximize the impact of the regime's vulnerabilities.

Concurrently, the U.S. is observing positive shifts in the Pacific, with the Solomon Islands potentially moving away from a clandestine security pact with Beijing and aligning more closely with the United States. Furthermore, Vanuatu recently cemented its security ties with Australia, signaling a broader trend of strengthening U.S. influence in the region.

Captain Brent Sadler (ret.) views this as a counterproductive approach.

Sadler warned that any Canadian expectations for new profitable business opportunities in mainland China are misguided, especially given the caustic business environment for foreign entities there since 2019. He concluded that such an approach is unlikely to yield positive outcomes.

He noted that the country relies on fresh capital inflows from Western nations to balance its financial books.

Beneath the appearance of a technological superpower, China faces significant widespread poverty and inherent structural instability. Recent real estate crises, coupled with escalating global energy prices, are intensifying the economic pressure on Beijing, further complicated by its persistent reliance on global oil markets despite possessing its own substantial oil reserves.
