Philippines Expands Pag-asa Island Amid China Watch

Current construction projects include an extension of the island's runway by approximately 200 meters and the development of a new sheltered harbor basin to further enhance its operational capabilities.

Pag-asa's strategic importance is amplified by its proximity to Chinese-controlled features, notably Subi Reef, which the Philippines refers to as Zamora Reef, where China has established extensive facilities.

Manila continues to maintain a military presence on the BRP Sierra Madre at Second Thomas Shoal, known as Ayungin Shoal, with resupply missions to this outpost frequently leading to confrontations with Chinese vessels, especially since 2021.

The construction of a new sheltered port is intended to facilitate safer and more efficient resupply of personnel and materials, aligning with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s policy to strengthen the Philippine footprint in the region.

Senator Risa Hontiveros underscored the Philippines' firm resolve during a visit to Pag-asa Island, emphasizing the nation's commitment to its territorial claims.

The Philippine government consistently reiterates its intention to maintain its presence in the Spratly Islands, including Thitu, despite ongoing maritime encounters and competing claims.

China, however, continues to assert its sovereignty over the entirety of the Spratly Islands and rejects the Philippine stance, setting the stage for continued regional tensions.
