Passengers Recount Terror on FlyDubai Flight

A passenger aboard the FlyDubai flight described utter terror, fearing the plane was being diverted to an enemy country with nothing but desert below them.

The passengers lacked trust in the crew, leading them to suspect even the flight attendants, as they did not know who was on their side during the crisis. The primary goal for those on board was simply to land safely on the ground.

Pilot and instructor Aaron Murphy demonstrated the cockpit view of the incident using a Boeing 737-800 simulator, showing a rapid descent where the aircraft reportedly dropped over 20,000 feet in just 35 seconds.

During this plunge, the speed reportedly exceeded 700 miles per hour, causing a massive ground dive with an active overspeed warning on the primary flight display.

Murphy noted that most passengers on that route would typically be lulled by the unchanging desert landscape below, making the sudden, drastic drop even more disorienting and terrifying.

Aaron Murphy, an aviation expert, expressed skepticism regarding initial speed reports, suggesting that if the aircraft truly hit those speeds during such a rapid descent, it would likely have disintegrated completely.

He indicated that some of the reported numbers don't make sense to him and may be inaccurate or subject to correction.

Confirmed physical damage included portions of the aircraft's rudder reportedly tearing away during flight, with the overspeed warning audible in the background rather than a stick shaker.

The aircraft's rudder section was completely torn away, causing a leak in the hydraulic system that risked critical flight controls.

However, the vertical fin remained intact, providing the essential directional stability needed to land safely. Aaron Murphy noted that the vertical fin was what saved the day.

The aircraft survived a momentary supersonic speed event and maintained structural integrity despite severe damage and fluid loss, leading Murphy to suggest this landing answers previous safety concerns regarding the Max 8.

Two hours into the flight, the plane climbed to 34,000 feet before suddenly plunging, with Flight Radar 24 data showing a steep descent, a sharp climb, and then another dive.

The jet ultimately lost nearly 20,000 feet of altitude in 35 seconds, reaching speeds of nearly 700 miles per hour, after the first officer allegedly stabbed the captain and attempted to crash the plane.

Following the attack on the captain, passenger Yaniv Haun subdued the assailant with a chokehold and assisted in leveling the aircraft by pulling back the controls, an action Haun attributed to his viewing of documentaries on plane crashes.

Passenger Yaniv Haun subdued the attacker with a chokehold, stating he then grabbed the controls and started pulling back the handles, which helped the plane level out.

Haun later revealed he assisted in leveling the plane after watching documentaries on plane crashes, which provided him with crucial knowledge in the emergency.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for pilot mental health screening and reform, drawing comparisons to the 2015 Germanwings crash and other historical 'suicide by pilot' events.

There is a major stigma for commercial pilots, as seeking mental health treatment can jeopardize their livelihood, prompting the US Senate to pass a bill expanding pilot mental health options, which is now pending House approval.
