Hanwha K9 Unanimously Chosen for US Next-Gen Self-Propelled Howitzer

The CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies), a leading U.S. think tank, is examining strategic scenarios that could utilize South Korea's Dosan Ahn Chang-ho-class submarines to counter China's aircraft carrier capabilities. The 3,000-ton Dosan Ahn Chang-ho submarine, capable of carrying heavy torpedoes and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), is analyzed to be able to effectively target underwater defense capabilities, which are considered a significant vulnerability of Chinese carrier strike groups.

China's aircraft carrier groups boast formidable surface power, but are known to be relatively vulnerable in terms of underwater defense capabilities. Accordingly, the capabilities of Korean submarines are being evaluated as an important variable in the strategic balance of Northeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.

Hanwha's K9 MH self-propelled howitzer achieved the feat of being exclusively selected as the prototype manufacturer for the U.S. military's self-propelled howitzer modernization project. This suggests that South Korea's K9 self-propelled howitzer can fill the gap in ground artillery power that resulted from the U.S. halting new self-propelled howitzer development for decades.

The U.S. military has been seeking to introduce next-generation self-propelled howitzers due to the aging and performance limitations of its current howitzers. In this process, the K9 self-propelled howitzer demonstrated unrivaled technology and performance, receiving high praise from the U.S. Department of Defense, which served as an opportunity to imprint South Korea's technological superiority in the defense industry worldwide.

In particular, the K9 MH is being developed as a wheeled self-propelled howitzer, boasting higher mobility compared to existing tracked self-propelled howitzers, and is expected to be efficiently operated in various battle environments, including urban warfare. This technological advancement aligns with the U.S. military's modernization strategy and has opened the possibility for large-scale exports in the future.

The Korean fighter jet KF-21 Boramae will enter full-scale operational deployment with the delivery of its first unit to the Republic of Korea Air Force on September 17. The KF-21 has currently completed air-to-air combat performance verification and is planned to evolve into a multi-role fighter through phased performance upgrades, including air-to-ground and air-to-ship capabilities.

The emergence of the KF-21 is particularly rising as a strong alternative for strengthening air power for Asian countries, such as the Philippines, which are experiencing territorial disputes with China. The KF-21 offers high performance along with flexible upgrade possibilities based on its platform, and is evaluated to be able to provide optimized solutions tailored to each country's security environment.

The successful operational deployment of the KF-21 Boramae is a significant event that proves South Korea is the only country in Asia capable of producing its own fighter jet. Other Asian countries such as Japan, India, and Pakistan are still struggling to develop their own high-performance fighter jets.

In this situation, the KF-21 is establishing itself as a realistic air power alternative to counter China's J-series fighter jets. South Korea's independent fighter production capability will greatly influence the security balance in the Asian region and is expected to further enhance the status of South Korea's defense industry in the future.
