9/11 Mastermind's Confession Tossed

A military judge has declared the 2007 FBI confession of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, inadmissible for his trial scheduled in 2028. This ruling comes just days before the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

Lieutenant Colonel Michael Stroughn, the presiding judge, determined that the confession was tainted because Mohammed had been subjected to waterboarding and torture while in CIA custody prior to his FBI interrogation.

The judge’s ruling highlighted several critical factors, including what he described as an unbroken continuation of psychological conditioning by the CIA and severe coercion at the time of the questioning in 2007. This persistent influence undermined the voluntariness of Mohammed's statements.

These procedural failures extend the inadmissibility to his 2007 interrogations at Guantanamo Bay.

Despite the recent ruling, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed had previously claimed full responsibility for the 9/11 operation in a 2007 tribunal. During that hearing, he stated his role clearly, acknowledging his comprehensive involvement.

Mohammed identified himself as the operational director for Osama bin Laden, taking credit for organizing, planning, follow-up, and execution of the 9/11 attacks from start to finish.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed also provided details about the original scope of the 9/11 attack plan, which was significantly more ambitious than what was eventually executed.

He revealed that the initial plot involved using 10 planes for two separate attacks on both the East and West Coasts of America, but Osama bin Laden ultimately scaled down the operation to four planes targeting one coast.
