US Warship Stranded, Japan F-15 Grounded Amid Rising Readiness Concerns

A series of military mishaps in the Western Pacific has brought renewed scrutiny to the operational intensity placed on United States and Japanese military assets and personnel. These forces are tasked with maintaining a continuous presence in some of Asia's most strategically sensitive maritime regions.

While recent incidents have not involved combat or resulted in casualties, they occur within a broader context of significant global commitments for the U.S. Navy and frequent air defense responses by Japan's air forces.

On July 24th, 2026, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold (DDG 65) experienced a severe engineering casualty involving its generators during routine operations in the Indo-Pacific. This incident led to a complete loss of power on the ship.

The power failure extended beyond just propulsion, critically affecting essential ship systems including water supply, sanitation, and cooling, which significantly impacted the crew's living conditions.

In response to the USS Benfold's incapacitation, other vessels within the George Washington carrier strike group provided crucial support. The guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls supplied cooked meals to the stranded destroyer's crew.

Other ships in the strike group also rendered assistance to alleviate the discomfort and challenges faced by the crew, refuting any claims that the vessel was left without aid during the incident.

After four days without power, the USS Benfold was towed into Subic Bay in the Philippines by contracted tugboats on July 28th. Specialists from the Ship Repair Facility and Japan Regional Maintenance Center met the ship to begin repairs.

Power was successfully restored on July 30th, and all necessary repairs were completed by August 7th. The destroyer departed Subic Bay on August 8th, with its engineering, combat, and crew support systems confirmed to be fully functional.

The incident with the USS Benfold underscores a fundamental challenge faced by any globally deployed navy: the impossibility of ships being everywhere simultaneously and the limits to how long maintenance can be deferred.

An example of this strain is the USS George Washington strike group being diverted to the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, which had already exceeded 250 days on an extended deployment. Such extended operations demonstrate that maintenance cycles and crew welfare cannot be indefinitely postponed without significant logistical and human costs.

On August 18th, shortly before 1:00 p.m., a Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-15 based at Naha Air Base experienced a landing gear problem at Naha Airport in Okinawa. The incident occurred as the aircraft landed, with its left main landing gear component apparently breaking.

The F-15 tilted onto its left side, causing its wing to contact the runway and immobilizing the aircraft. This resulted in the closure of one runway at Naha Airport for approximately four hours.

The runway closure significantly disrupted local commercial air traffic, affecting about 40 commercial flights during the operational period.
