US Sanctions Shift Strategy to Cripple Iran

The US Treasury has imposed new, aggressive sanctions against Iran, specifically targeting any entity that provides assistance to Iranian-owned aircraft.

These measures mean that any company or country involved in services such as ticketing, boarding, air traffic control, fuel provision, or maintenance for Iranian-owned planes will be immediately cut off from the US dollar system.

This new US strategy acknowledges that nearly all direct sanctions against the Iranian regime have been exhausted over the past 40 years.

The current approach aims to make daily life as difficult as possible for the Iranian population, in the hope that widespread hardship will lead to a rebellion and the overthrow of the government, despite previous failures where the regime responded with lethal force against its citizens.

The Iranian military, combined with the IRGC, the government's paramilitary arm, commands over a million personnel primarily tasked with internal occupation.

This formidable force is not designed for foreign invasion but rather to maintain control within Iran and prevent uprisings among its ethnically diverse population, where Persians constitute only about 50% of the total, making regime change historically difficult in the region.

China is the primary source for most manufactured goods flowing into Iran, including crucial components needed for their drone technology, making its stance pivotal for the sanctions' impact, although substantial guidance on this issue is unlikely from the upcoming Trump-Xi Jinping summit due to institutional weaknesses.

The impending talks between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping face significant challenges due to a pervasive informational vacuum within both administrations.

The Trump administration notably weakened key advisory institutions like the CIA, State Department, and National Security Council, leaving future leadership potentially ill-informed on complex geopolitical issues.

Similarly, Xi Jinping operates in an environment where internal systems were purged years ago, contributing to a leadership characterized as isolated and likely to misjudge the geopolitical landscape, potentially creating exploitable gaps for nations like Iran.
