People Power Party Supreme Council Member Jang Dong-hyuk visited flood-damaged areas in Geoje and Tongyeong, urged swift government support, and stated that the recently appointed special prosecutor for elections must have a strong will to investigate past general and presidential elections.
He stated that the actual damage was far more severe than what he had seen on screen.
In Geoje, the entire downtown commercial district was destroyed beyond simple landslide damage, and in Tongyeong, rapid recovery is also urgently needed.
He then expressed concern that delays in safety diagnostics could prolong residents' evacuation.
He added that in some affected areas, basic recovery, such as power supply restoration, has not even been properly carried out.
Supreme Council Member Jang Dong-hyuk pointed out that damage from climate change, such as droughts and floods, recurs every year. He judged that the existing disaster response systems, which have been maintained from the past, are not appropriate for the current situation.
Therefore, he emphasized the need to swiftly reorganize the disaster response system.
He judged that the most politically neutral person among the six recommended candidates was appointed.
He interpreted this special prosecutor appointment as being entrusted with a historical responsibility for the establishment of democracy in South Korea.
Supreme Council Member Jang Dong-hyuk explained that the scope of the special prosecutor's investigation is broad, stating that not only the recent shortage of ballot counting machines but also suspicions of electronic manipulation and overall election management revealed through the joint investigation unit can be investigated. He added that under the Special Prosecutor Act, even cases that come to light can be included in the scope of investigation.
He emphasized that the Special Prosecutor Act, which allows the special prosecutor to look into not only the current local elections but also previous general or presidential elections, has been passed. This means that the special prosecutor has the legal basis to thoroughly uncover problems from past elections.
Therefore, Supreme Council Member Jang stressed that the special prosecutor must approach the investigation with a strong will commensurate with this broad scope. He believes the active role of the special prosecutor is crucial to resolve public suspicions.
He predicted that the role of this special prosecutor would be a significant turning point in securing the reliability of South Korea's electoral system.
