Joojin Kim details how redirecting finance in East Asia can decarbonize global maritime shipping, the world's sixth-largest emitter.
Joojin Kim acknowledged a prevalent feeling of climate progress slowing down as companies and governments seem to retreat from commitments, making it difficult to maintain motivation amidst negative headlines.
Despite these challenges, he asserted that a climate-solution economy is evolving into a more profitable and affordable sector, emphasizing the importance of identifying strategic 'leverage points' to catalyze systemic change.
This industry contributes to pollution through its cargo, often comprising fossil fuels, its heavy oil and LNG fuel sources, and its construction materials, which frequently include coal-based steel. Crude oil and gas constitute approximately one-third of maritime trade, while LNG trade has doubled in the last decade, leading to increased methane emissions from its usage.
This region's dominance in global shipbuilding, steel production for ships, and the financial backing for these sectors establishes East Asia as a crucial leverage point for climate intervention in the shipping industry.
Solutions for Our Climate successfully influenced major Asian financial institutions to cease coal financing, providing a blueprint for its new strategy.
The organization's three-step strategy involves exposing financial risks, redirecting capital towards sustainable alternatives, and fostering markets for these new solutions. In 2022 alone, South Korean government banks provided over $10 billion in financing for LNG ships; the initiative aims to declare LNG a 'no-investment zone' by advocating for exclusion policies among lenders.
The initiative's focus is on developing robust supply chains and creating market demand, primarily through the establishment of 'green shipping corridors' connecting ports, with a long-term goal of eliminating up to 2.2 gigatons of annual emissions by 2032.
Integrated supply chains and robust market demand are crucial for the adoption of clean shipping technologies.
The strategy includes establishing green shipping corridors between ports, shifting production from oil refineries to renewable-rich fuel hubs, and implementing green hydrogen as a replacement for coal in steelmaking to facilitate this transformation.
The organization has already achieved success in leveraging financial pressure, notably convincing four European banks to withdraw from a significant LNG project in Mozambique.
Further, they have successfully blocked new investments in coal-based steel production and secured financial backing for hydrogen-based steel mills, demonstrating the efficacy of their divestment strategy.
This multidisciplinary team, comprised of marketers, diplomats, lawyers, and shipping experts, is dedicated to transforming shipping from a conduit of polluting trade into a driver of clean economic activity.
This ambitious reduction is comparable to a full year of emissions from the entire European Union and represents a strategic effort to move a hidden engine of the global economy towards sustainability, described as 'playing chess, not checkers'.
