Pittington holds symbolic referendum against asylum seeker housing plans
The village of Pittington conducted a symbolic referendum, with an overwhelming majority voting to leave the United Kingdom. Out of the ballots cast, 285 residents voted for secession compared to just 26 who opted to stay, signaling strong local dissent.
This vote serves as a protest against government proposals to house 1,256 male asylum seekers at a former military base situated approximately one mile from the village.
The significant margin of the vote underscores the community's profound objections to the plan.
Tatiana reported the results, stating, "the village of Pittington has voted to leave the United Kingdom in a symbolic referendum. 285 voted to leave compared with 26 opting to stay."
