Trump Dismisses Russia, China Aid to Iran Despite Reports

He tied the conflict to gasoline prices, claiming the war will end very soon and pump prices will fall as a result.

Trump pointed to current gas prices as lower than during President Biden's tenure, when Biden took no action on Iran. The framing ignored reporting from Bloomberg News and the Wall Street Journal documenting Chinese and Russian material support for Iranian weapons systems.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Chinese entities shipped components for Iranian drones and missiles. Bloomberg News separately reported that Western allies believe Iran restocked with Russian weapons during a ceasefire with the U.S. over the summer.

The reports undercut Trump's assertion that Russia and China would not risk supporting Iran. Both countries have now provided documented assistance to Tehran's military capabilities during the ongoing conflict.

Trump made a deal with Russia to bring more of its diesel to the global market, but the agreement sparked immediate resistance. Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski spoke from the Warsaw Security Forum, saying pressure should land on the aggressor—Russia—not the victim of aggression.

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators called on Trump to reverse the diesel deal. Sikorski's distinction reflected growing concern that Trump's approach treats Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its other actions as equivalent to Ukraine's defense of its territory.

The dispute reveals how Trump's foreign policy choices are being used to explain energy prices. Rather than Ukraine's defense driving fuel costs, Welch argued, the administration's own decision to confront Iran bore direct responsibility for the market shock.

Russia's initial release of 2.25 million barrels is more than a million barrels less than Americans consume in a single day. The gap underscores why even if Russian diesel reaches markets in coming weeks, the volume is structurally insufficient to move the needle on U.S. prices.

Saudi Arabia is carrying a barrage of drone and missile attacks from a proxy group in Yemen, and conditions are worsening. Bloomberg National Security Editor Ian Marlow described it as the most severe escalation throughout the entire Iran war: "It's getting really bad, and I think this is, uh, for Saudi in particular. This is the worst we've seen throughout the whole Iran war in terms of the fallout."

Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made the comments on the first day of Bloomberg's New Economy Forum in New Delhi. Sunak said the post-Cold War framework—a unipolar system largely enforced by U.S. strength—is over, and Trump is not the cause of that collapse but a symptom of it.

The breakdown creates geopolitical danger because uncertainty now surrounds what new global order will settle into. Sunak's framing suggested that Trump's policies, while disruptive, reflect deeper shifts in the distribution of global power rather than originating them.
