Japan Expands Military Reach, US Unveils New Missile

This landmark deal permits Japan to utilize Australian missile ranges for testing, including advanced hypersonic weapons, over the next decade. Additionally, both nations announced 'Boke Book,' a collaborative project focused on high-energy laser technology.

Designed by Raytheon, this missile is intended to target enemy support aircraft, particularly aiming to disrupt China's 'kill chain' by destroying critical assets like early warning aircraft and aerial tankers. Its introduction signifies a strategic move to undermine a key component of China's military strategy.

Leaders from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member nations convened in Kyrgyzstan on August 31 to commemorate the bloc's 25th anniversary. Key attendees included Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with leaders from Iran, Turkey, and Pakistan. This summit took place amid ongoing US sanctions against Iran and persistent global trade friction, setting a complex backdrop for discussions.

Despite this impressive reach, the organization faces internal disagreements and questions regarding its practical effectiveness during crises. The collective image projected at the summit underscored a shared interest among member states in reducing American global influence.

This deployment highlights Japan's strategic efforts to expand its security network beyond its immediate vicinity.

The Air Self-Defense Force announced that the joint air drill, named Veer Guardian 26, is scheduled to run from September 9 to 21. The exercise will take place at Jodhpur Air Force Station in Rajasthan, involving three F-2A fighters and 110 personnel from Fukuoka's Tsuiki Air Base.

Japanese press reports, citing an unnamed defense official, indicate that the deployment of fighter jets to India is intended to constrain China's regional ambitions. Analysts view this move as a clear signal that Asian powers are beginning to link regional threats, forcing China to manage coordinated air operations across multiple theaters simultaneously.

Stephen Nagy, Professor of Politics and International Studies at International Christian University in Tokyo, emphasizes Japan's pragmatic shift towards projecting its force into South Asia. This strategy allows Japan to actively diversify its security network while navigating pressures from both Beijing and Washington, demonstrating its credibility as a security partner beyond Northeast Asia.

On August 31, the Defense Ministry submitted a record budget request for approximately 8.9 trillion yen, equivalent to about $55.7 billion, for fiscal year 2027. This marks the 15th consecutive annual record for defense spending, underscoring Japan's sustained commitment to bolstering its military capabilities.

The Defense Ministry's Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency announced on August 25 that it had signed a mass production contract for the Tera Bee 1 interceptor drone. Developed by Tokyo-based Terra Drone, this contract followed competitive trials and represents the first instance of such a rapid, three-month acquisition process for drones.

The Tera Bee 1 interceptor drone, a 3D-printed, rocket-launched system, is designed to effectively counter one-way attack drones similar to the Shahed type. This technology offers a significantly more cost-effective solution compared to deploying conventional interceptor missiles, leveraging lessons learned from conflicts such as the one in Ukraine.
