Skanderbeg's 25-Year Albanian War

Sultan Mehmed I initiated a large-scale military campaign in 1415 to permanently subjugate the Albanian mountains, aiming to transition from tribute collection to direct administrative control.

This shift involved the implementation of the Devshirme system, forcing the conscription of Christian boys into the Ottoman army, and the Jizya tax on non-Muslims, alongside the confiscation of southern Albanian lands for distribution to timar-holding soldiers. Albanian noble families were also compelled to send their sons to the Ottoman court as political hostages, solidifying Ottoman dominance.

In 1428, Gjon Kastrioti attempted to challenge Ottoman overlordship by forming an alliance with the Doge of Venice.

However, this alliance dissolved prematurely in 1430 when Venice signed a separate peace treaty with the Sultan, leaving Gjon isolated. His subsequent defeat resulted in his lands being converted into Ottoman timars, eliminating local autonomy.

Skanderbeg used the chaos following the Ottoman defeat to desert his command, riding out with 300 loyal followers to return to Albania and launch a rebellion. Upon his return, he employed a forged letter from the Sultan to regain control of Krujë.

Following his return to Krujë, Skanderbeg delivered a powerful address to his followers, rallying them to the cause of Albanian liberation, which ignited a widespread rebellion against Ottoman rule.

The League allowed local noble houses to retain significant autonomy while pledging minimal essential resources, fostering a collaborative yet decentralized structure aimed at sustained resistance.

In 1445, Skanderbeg achieved a significant victory at the Battle of Mokra, defeating Firuz Pasha in a narrow valley and inflicting over 3,000 Ottoman casualties.

This success was followed by another decisive win at the Battle of Otonetë in 1446, where Mustafa Pasha's forces suffered over 5,000 deaths, further cementing Skanderbeg's military prowess.

These persistent defeats imposed a rising logistical strain on the Ottoman government, which was already dysfunctional under the new and inexperienced Sultan Mehmed II.

While the Ottomans launched a continuous five-day bombardment, their artillery proved ineffective in breaching the fortress walls. Skanderbeg maintained an active force of 8,000 outside the walls, employing hit-and-run tactics to disrupt the besiegers.

The siege of Krujë lasted for six months, eventually forcing the Ottoman forces to retreat due to harsh cold weather and severe supply shortages.

The Ottoman army suffered immense casualties, estimated at nearly half of its total force, while Albanian casualties remained significantly lower, around 1,000. This campaign marked the final military endeavor for Sultan Murad II.

Skanderbeg ambushed and routed Hamza Pasha at the Battle of Modrič on July 21st, even capturing Hamza himself. Subsequently, Tahip Pasha was killed during an engagement on the plain of Meçad.

These combined battles resulted in over 7,000 Ottoman soldiers killed and many more wounded, demonstrating Skanderbeg's tactical superiority.

Facing an Ottoman provincial army of 50,000 led by Isa Bey, Skanderbeg used a force of 10,000 men to feign a retreat into the hills, effectively hiding his true intentions.

The rugged terrain around Albulena further disrupted Ottoman coordination, making them vulnerable. On September 2nd, Albanian forces emerged from concealment to launch a surprise attack on the unsuspecting Ottoman camp, achieving complete surprise as many Ottoman soldiers were outside their defensive positions.

The decisive engagement resulted in approximately 15,000 Ottomans killed and another 15,000 captured, including Hamza, showcasing Skanderbeg's mastery of asymmetric warfare against a superior force.

The Pope affirmed Skanderbeg as a 'stout bastion against the fury of the unbridled Turks,' cementing his symbolic status across Europe as a crucial figure against Ottoman expansion.

Upon arriving in southern Italy, Skanderbeg encountered a drastically different battleground from Albania's mountainous terrain, characterized by open ground and professional condottieri.

His Albanian cavalry, equipped with lighter gear and faster horses, effectively harassed heavier Italian formations, demonstrating superior speed and maneuverability.

Skanderbeg's tactical versatility was proven in a notable victory near Troia, where he defeated the renowned condottiero Jacopo Piccinino, showcasing his ability to compete successfully with professional Italian commanders outside Albania's familiar environment.

This success demonstrated that Albanian discipline and tactics held up effectively against the established military standards of Western Europe, validating Skanderbeg's leadership and the quality of his forces.

However, this ceasefire proved short-lived as Western powers began to reconsider Albania's strategic importance in potential anti-Ottoman crusades, leading to renewed tensions and a breakdown of the agreement.

Arriving in 1466 with a 30,000-strong force, the Sultan initiated the second siege of Krujë, aiming to crush Skanderbeg's resistance once and for all.

During this campaign, the Ottomans constructed the Elbasan fortress, a strategic move to maintain continuous pressure on the region and consolidate their gains even if Krujë itself remained unconquered.

Skanderbeg engaged in extensive negotiations with Lekë Dukagjini to reform the League of Lezhë, aiming to coordinate a renewed effort against the Ottoman forces.

These negotiations successfully led to the assembly of a relief force of approximately 10,000 soldiers in the spring of 1467, poised to challenge the Ottoman siege.

During the operation, the Ottoman commander Ballaban Bader was killed, which caused the besieging Ottoman army to shatter and withdraw, relieving the pressure on Krujë.

Hadim Suleyman Pasha led a provincial army of over 20,000 troops, but the Venetian garrison mounted a formidable defense, holding out for months and inflicting approximately 3,000 casualties during the final Ottoman assault.

Despite their efforts, Ottoman forces were temporarily compelled to withdraw due to the timely arrival of a Christian fleet, demonstrating the ongoing importance of external support in the conflict.

Following the prolonged conflict with the Ottoman Empire, many Albanian noble families, including the influential Kastrioti, sought refuge in southern Italy, where Albanian communities had already been established.

These refugees and their descendants became known as the Arbëreshë, who, despite their exile, diligently preserved their distinct language, culture, and traditions, forming a lasting diaspora.
