Ukraine War Spreading to the Korean Peninsula

As Ukraine requests Cheongung II, an air defense weapon, from South Korea, Dr. Cho Han-bum warned that if South Korea provides the weapons, Russia could transfer nuclear technology, ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) technology, and SLBM (submarine-launched ballistic missile) technology to North Korea. This analysis suggests that since Cheongung II can play a similar role to Patriot missiles, Russia might use the North Korean issue as a countermeasure.

Dr. Cho believes that Ukraine's request might be intended to elicit South Korea's support under the pretext of potential North Korean troop deployment, emphasizing that South Korea should prioritize national interests over sympathy when deciding on aid.

If South Korea provides weapons to Ukraine, there is a risk of escalation into an indirect war where South Korean weapons and North Korean weapons confront each other on the Ukrainian front. This indirect war could spill over to the Korean Peninsula, posing a direct threat to South Korea's security, according to analysis.

This suggests that the war in Ukraine is more than just a regional conflict and could affect security on the Korean Peninsula, serving as a reason for South Korea to be cautious in its decision to provide weapons.

Dr. Cho Han-bum pointed out that given the realistic situation facing South Korea, it is difficult to provide lethal weapons or equivalent arms to Ukraine, separate from humanitarian aid.

South Korea's excellent refining (crude oil processing) capability has been cited as the main reason Russia seeks South Korean petroleum products. South Korea possesses world-class crude oil processing capabilities, enabling it to meet Russia's demand.

Additionally, the geopolitical proximity between Russia and South Korea, allowing for train transport via Vladivostok, is a significant factor. Furthermore, Russia classifying South Korea not as an enemy but as an 'unfriendly nation' means diplomatic relations are not completely severed, also contributing to the import of South Korean products.

Russia is regarded as a treasure trove of mineral resources rather than an industrial powerhouse. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the division of labor broke down, leading to the loss of its industrial base. Since then, it has maintained its economy by selling mineral resources like oil. These industrial limitations are pointed out as vulnerabilities of the Russian economy.

Dr. Cho Han-bum stated that approximately 75% of Russia's total exports depend on natural resources, particularly energy. This means that the Russian economy is heavily concentrated on specific resources, making it very vulnerable to changes in international affairs.

Russia has a weak manufacturing base, making it difficult to produce many industrial products domestically, thus necessitating a high dependency on external resources.

After the Ukraine war, Russia's relations with Western countries such as Europe, the United States, and Japan are expected to deteriorate, making them virtually 'enemies.' Consequently, when facing the issue of reconstruction costs for occupied territories destroyed by the war, Russia will find it difficult to expect support from the West.

China has experienced historical territorial disputes with Russia and also has technological limitations, making it difficult to actively support Russia's reconstruction. Therefore, it is predicted that Russia will face significant difficulties in its self-recovery amid international isolation after the war.
