Marcos Bolsters Coast Guard Amid Regional Tensions

Manila is targeting an acquisition of 50 vessels to enhance its patrols in the West Philippine Sea, a critical region for the Philippines. This expansion includes 40 vessels from France, five Japanese-funded Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRVs), and the integration of US Marine Protector Class boats. The goal is to ensure the Philippine Coast Guard has the capacity for continuous and sustained presence in these waters.

The United States has pledged up to $9 million in funding for July to expand a Philippine Coast Guard pier in Palawan. This investment is aimed at enhancing maritime law enforcement capabilities and strengthening the Philippine presence in the contested South China Sea. The expanded infrastructure will support more efficient operations and patrols from a strategically vital location.

The Philippines strategically opts for white-hull Coast Guard vessels over grey-hull naval warships in disputed waters to avoid military escalation. This approach allows the nation to maintain a strong presence and enforce maritime law without provoking direct conventional military conflict.
