Wall Street Overlooks Tesla’s AI-Driven Future

Their analysis focused on the lack of a live stream and concrete scaling metrics during the event. JP Morgan projects Tesla’s robo-taxi fleet to remain relatively small until 2026, reaching approximately 9,000 vehicles by 2027.

The Cybercab event was intended as a celebration of the team's significant achievement in bringing the vehicle to launch. Its primary purpose was to thank the team for accomplishing what seemed impossible, focusing on employee recognition rather than providing detailed investor data points. Analysts, however, fundamentally misunderstood the event's celebratory nature and expected a traditional product reveal with extensive specifications.

Tesla is advocating for analysts to shift their focus from mere vehicle counts to 'miles driven,' as this metric directly correlates with revenue generation. Analysts are currently struggling to adapt their models to this new performance indicator. Factors influencing 'miles driven' include the total fleet size, the geographical size of the service area, and the operating hours of the vehicles.

Since July, Tesla has experienced significant increases in vehicle deployment and expansion of its service areas. Fundamental issues that were present in Q1 appear to have been resolved, indicating a more stable operational environment. These developments suggest that analysts should now model for an accelerated pace of operations in future projections.

Public perception often follows a predictable pattern, moving from outright disbelief that something is possible to dismissing its significance once it becomes reality. This involves constantly shifting goalposts, where a breakthrough is immediately met with questions about what it still cannot do. This cognitive bias consistently leads to a severe underestimation of exponential technological growth.

Spending on AI infrastructure is projected to dramatically increase from approximately $800 billion this year to potentially over $1.2 trillion next year. This represents massive leaps in large numbers, indicating that the expansion and compounding of investments in AI are continuing at an extraordinary pace. Currently, a significant premium is being placed on AI companies, with many sectors like healthcare and manufacturing still largely untapped for AI applications.

Tesla is actively recruiting manufacturing engineers in both Palo Alto and Austin to lead the launch and ramp-up of production for Optimus hands. The robotic hands are identified as one of the most intricate and crucial subsystems within the Optimus robot. This initiative suggests that existing manufacturing teams are being expanded and enhanced, rather than starting production from scratch.

The roles in Austin for Optimus production are currently focused on capital expenditure (Capex) and the foundational design of the production line for the foreseeable next year. In contrast, the Fremont facility is concentrating on operationalizing an existing production line for immediate manufacturing needs. It is likely that the Austin facility is being prepared for future iterations, specifically Optimus V4, while the V3 prototypes are being refined.
