Mike Lawler Opposes Russia Diesel Deal

Representative Mike Lawler stated his fundamental opposition to any deal with Russia that would provide financial resources, especially while Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine. Lawler identified the geopolitical landscape as being shaped by an "unholy alliance" of Russia, China, and Iran.

He characterized Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "vile dictator and thug" who has overseen numerous war crimes in Ukraine, asserting that U.S. energy policy should focus on domestic production rather than negotiating with aggressors.

Lawler criticized European nations for continuing to purchase Russian gas and oil, arguing that this effectively financed the very war they sought to stop. He contended that the Biden administration should have implemented secondary sanctions much earlier to prevent this.

He asserted that much of the current global instability stems from a failure to curb reliance on energy supplies from geopolitical adversaries.

Lawler underscored the importance of removing Chinese influence from the Western Hemisphere and cutting off China's oil supply from Iran. He cited the removal of Venezuelan President Maduro as a positive step, noting that U.S. crude oil supply has reached levels not seen since 2017.

He highlighted his role in passing legislation to sanction the illicit oil trade between China and Iran, emphasizing that U.S. policy must cut off the energy funding streams that support Russian, Iranian, and Chinese military efforts.

Representative Lawler reported that Russia is currently losing approximately 30,000 soldiers per month in Ukraine, describing the attrition rate as "insane." He mentioned an estimate that the average life expectancy of a frontline Russian soldier is merely seventeen minutes.

He reiterated that the conflict, while driven by complex domestic pressures on Russia's part, remains a moral crisis resulting from the actions of a dictator.

Lawler contended that Democrats advocate for the elimination of fossil fuels, a stance he believes would lead to significantly higher energy costs if domestic oil and gas production were reduced. He challenged listeners to consider the potential impact on gas and diesel prices under such policies.

He argued that the public discussion is not adequately addressing the potential increase in energy costs if Democratic energy production goals are fully implemented.

No new refineries have been built in the U.S. since the 1970s, a trend the host identifies as the primary bottleneck fueling recent spikes in gasoline and diesel prices. This limitation directly impacts the supply of refined products.

A permitting deal is cited as an essential prerequisite for initiating the construction of new refinery infrastructure, highlighting a key regulatory barrier to increasing supply.

Lawler described foreign policy and international conflicts as being deeply interconnected with global powers such as China, Russia, Iran, and Venezuela. He argued that energy independence is a critical component of national security and global stability.

He maintained that a sustainable, low-cost energy future for the U.S. hinges on prioritizing domestic production. To that end, he listed permitting reform, historical tax cuts, and housing bills as key legislative priorities aimed at improving the American economy.
