The culture of wearing shoes indoors in the United States is changing based on new awareness about hygiene.
It drew media attention through a Time article on September 14 that pointed out the dangers of wearing shoes indoors; the article cited research finding coliform bacteria on 80% of Americans' shoe soles and raised the issue of contamination in living spaces such as beds and sofas.
