China Drills With Rare Five-Destroyer Formation

The exercises included four Type 052D destroyers—the Weinan, Changsha, Guiyang, and Guilin—operating alongside a Type 055 destroyer, the Zunyi. These drills offer a clear indication of the accelerating pace at which the PLA Navy is enhancing both the scale and complexity of its maritime operations.

"China has put an unusually powerful group of frontline destroyers through live-fire exercises in the South China Sea, offering another glimpse of how quickly the People's Liberation Army Navy is expanding both the scale and sophistication of its operations."

The deployment of four Type 052D family ships operating alongside a Type 055 destroyer provides naval commanders with a formidable combination of air defense, anti-ship, and long-range strike capabilities. This concentration of high-end destroyers facilitates integrated air defense and anti-ship operations on a significant scale. The exercises effectively simulate command, targeting, and weapons coordination, reaching a level of complexity that approaches wartime scenarios.

"Four Type 052D family ships operating alongside a Type 055 gives commanders a substantial combination of air defense, anti-ship, and long-range strike capability."

The Type 052D, known to NATO as the Luyang III class, remains a cornerstone of China's naval modernization efforts and one of its most critical surface combatants. These vessels are approximately 7,500 tons and equipped with 64 vertical launch cells, capable of firing a variety of missiles. They also feature large phased array radars, enhancing their sensor capabilities. With at least 35 hulls already constructed, the Type 052D forms a significant numerical foundation for the expanding Chinese fleet.

"The Type 052D, known by NATO as the Luyang III class, is one of the most important surface combatants in China's naval modernization program."

Unlike earlier models with traditional spherical enclosures, the Wuhu features a dual-face radar arrangement. This system is believed to be a rotating active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, indicating a significant technological upgrade. This continuous improvement of mature designs while maintaining production is a notable trend in China's naval development.

"Wuhu is drawing attention because it appears to represent another evolution of the Type 052D design."

This vessel is significantly larger than the Type 052D and boasts 112 vertical launch cells, offering substantial firepower. It is designed to perform independent group command or to act as an escort for aircraft carriers, excelling in long-range air defense, anti-ship warfare, and strike missions. In these exercises, the Type 055 led components of the shore-attack drills.

"The Type 055 is larger than the Type 052D and carries 112 vertical launch cells. It is designed for long-range air defense, anti-ship warfare, and strike missions."

This missile is estimated to have a strike range of 600 to 900 miles. This integration represents a strategic shift by China to distribute a new generation of long-range anti-ship weapons across a large fleet of destroyers, rather than confining them to only a few premium warships.

"China can potentially distribute a new generation of long-range anti-ship weapons across a large fleet of destroyers rather than concentrating them on only a handful of premium warships."

Recent military confirmations have indicated that two Chinese Coast Guard fatalities occurred during that incident. The presence of the Guilin in these active exercises signals its return to operational, forward-deployed status, despite the unresolved tensions from the collision.

"The return of Guiyang, hull number 164, adds an especially sensitive dimension to the exercise. Guiyang was the Type 052D involved in the dramatic August 11th, 2025 collision near Scarborough Shoal."

Manila continues to argue that the surrounding waters fall within the rights granted to the Philippines under international maritime law. The 2016 arbitral tribunal, in a significant ruling, rejected China's historic rights claim to the area. However, Beijing consistently rejects this ruling and continues to assert its sovereignty over the shoal.

"China maintains effective control around the Shoal since the 2012 standoff while Manila argues that the surrounding waters fall within rights granted to the Philippines under international maritime law."

These drills included a Type 052D destroyer, a Type 071 amphibious transport dock, a Type 054A frigate, and a Type 056A corvette. Additionally, H-6K bombers, armed with YJ-12 missiles, participated in the exercises. Beijing asserts that these actions are necessary defensive measures taken in response to the current situation in the South China Sea.

The monitoring data indicated 41 Coast Guard ships and 15 PLA Navy ships in the area. Bajo de Masinloc, also known as Scarborough Shoal, registered the highest concentration, with 23 Chinese vessels. Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad of the Philippine Navy warned that these activities actively undermine the rules-based international order.

"The Armed Forces of the Philippines said it monitored 56 Chinese naval and Coast Guard vessels around four major West Philippine Sea locations during August."

In response, China deploys Coast Guard assets, conducts naval patrols, or increases air activity in the disputed areas. Manila often publicizes the Chinese presence, while Beijing, in turn, accuses outside powers of interfering in regional affairs.

"The Philippines expands patrols or trains with partner countries. China responds with Coast Guard deployments, naval patrols, or air activity. Manila publicizes the Chinese presence. Beijing accuses outside powers of interfering."

The nature of confrontations in the South China Sea has significantly evolved, moving away from encounters primarily involving fishing boats and Coast Guard ships. Today, many encounters involve large guided missile destroyers, bombers, advanced fighters, maritime patrol aircraft, and increasingly sophisticated unmanned systems operating in close proximity. This shift represents a substantial transformation in the maritime capabilities and the seriousness of the engagements in the region.

"Today, some encounters take place with large guided missile destroyers, bombers, advanced fighters, maritime patrol aircraft, and increasingly sophisticated unmanned systems nearby."

This modernization allows China to conduct simultaneous carrier group operations and maintain robust local patrols without stripping assets from other critical areas. The ability to form such powerful groups is steadily becoming standard practice for the PLA Navy, demonstrating its expanding operational scale and flexibility.

"The more consequential development is that a formation once considered exceptional is becoming increasingly practical for the PLA Navy to assemble."

These upgrades include new radar configurations, extended helicopter facilities on later variants, and continuously evolving missile options. Crucially, the demonstrated compatibility of the class with the YJ-20 hypersonic missile suggests China's intent to keep these ships highly effective, leveraging continuous improvements rather than solely relying on entirely new designs.

"New radar configurations, extended helicopter facilities on later variants, continuously evolving missile options, and the demonstrated compatibility of the class with the YJ-20 suggests China intends to keep these ships relevant even as newer warship classes enter service."

These capabilities can support carrier operations, protect amphibious forces, escort task groups, and effectively threaten opposing surface ships across a wide section of the region. The recent drills specifically demonstrate the integrated employment of these advanced destroyers, signaling a fundamental shift in regional power dynamics.

"A large inventory of Type 052Ds gives China a network of mobile air defense and long-range strike platforms that can support carrier operations, protect amphibious forces, escort task groups, and threaten opposing surface ships across a wide section of the Western Pacific."
