A veteran developer argues that traditional terminal interfaces are no longer suited for modern multi-tasking workflows, leading to increased cognitive load and inefficiency.
The speaker, Theo, recounted his extensive experience with terminal usage, beginning at the age of 13. He detailed how terminals have been an integral part of his daily routines, used for running applications, performing work tasks, and conducting audits throughout his career.
Despite his long history, Theo contends that terminals are no longer the appropriate tool for current development practices. He asserts that the shape and functionality of terminals do not align with modern workflows, suggesting it is time for developers to acknowledge this inefficiency.
This shift implies that what was once a tool with low mental overhead has now become a significant mental cost.
Theo further elaborated on the cognitive burden of managing multiple tasks simultaneously within a terminal. He highlighted the frustration of keeping track of what is happening in different terminal windows or panels.
Users are forced to memorize a multitude of hotkeys to navigate between various processes, making the mental mapping of panel layouts fragile and prone to errors.
Users often develop mental systems to manage multiple panels, assigning specific tasks to specific screens. For example, one might designate three panels for three primary tasks, a fourth for another specific function, and a fifth as a flexible panel for miscellaneous uses.
However, this carefully constructed mental model quickly collapses when a sixth task arises, exceeding the established panel capacity and breaking the entire system of organization.
