Philippines Expands Coast Guard Fleet and Personnel

The Philippine Coast Guard is on track to significantly expand its fleet, with Admiral Ronnie Gilgavin confirming a target of 50 new ships within the next five years. This includes 40 vessels from France, five multi-role response vessels (MRVs) from Japan, and two boats from the United States. The demand for Coast Guard service is evident, with over 44,000 applicants competing for only 4,000 available slots in 2025, highlighting the high interest in joining the force.

The United States is contributing to the Philippines' maritime security infrastructure with a $9 million investment for the expansion of a Philippine Coast Guard pier in Palawan. This upgrade aims to enhance maritime law enforcement presence and sustain operations in the South China Sea.

Improved logistics capabilities, including facilities for fuel and spare parts, are critical for maintaining continuous operations and supporting the expanded fleet in strategically important waters.
