Blackstone's Rise to Financial Dominance
Stephen Schwarzman co-founded Blackstone, a firm that has become the world's largest alternative asset manager by successfully moving private equity from a niche market to the mainstream. Blackstone primarily invests clients' capital into private companies, real estate, and loans originating outside traditional banking systems, rather than conventional public stock, bond, or cash portfolios.
As of July 2026, Blackstone held more than 12,500 real estate assets and 250 portfolio companies, with total assets under management of $1.3 trillion. The firm went public in 2007, solidifying its position at the forefront of the alternative assets industry, a trend Schwarzman observed as capitalism shifted towards private ownership.
