Google Researchers Hack Pixel Phones Via Audio Files

Google Project Zero researchers Natalie Silvanovich and Seth Jenkins successfully demonstrated a remote exploit targeting Pixel phones. This attack is significant because it requires no user interaction, meaning no clicks on links or installation of applications are needed to compromise a device. David Bombal emphasized the severity of the exploit, stating that an attacker could send an audio file and take control of the phone. Android incorporates a media codec sandbox designed to restrict the permissions of media processing components. By exploiting vulnerabilities within these drivers, attackers can escape the intended containment of the media codec sandbox and gain more extensive control over the device.

Therefore, any memory corruption bugs found in these drivers can lead to the same types of memory corruption issues that typically occur, but this time, they execute directly within the kernel's privileged environment. She added that the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 required separate bugs to be exploited due to differences in their underlying driver states and configurations.

Android's Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) feature presents significant challenges for exploit development by loading memory locations at random addresses. Natalie Silvanovich expressed surprise at the extent of Android's ASLR randomization, noting that it randomizes memory pointers at a very low level. This deep randomization made traditional partial overwrites ineffective as an exploitation technique. Consequently, the exploit required an intricate setup involving 40 different staging frames to successfully bypass the unpredictable memory layout and achieve reliable execution.

Natalie Silvanovich confirmed that it took her approximately eight weeks of full-time work to successfully develop and execute the exploit. This timeline underscores the significant effort and high complexity involved in discovering and weaponizing such sophisticated vulnerabilities.
