China Fires Flares at Philippine Aircraft

Beijing's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, declared that China does not recognize the 2016 arbitration ruling concerning the South China Sea. China asserts that the Philippines has abused the United Nations dispute mechanisms through its actions.

Mao Ning further urged the Philippines to cease what Beijing described as provocations and theatrics, emphasizing the need to prevent undermining China-Philippines relations and stability in the South China Sea.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. rebuffed accusations from China that his conduct regarding the maritime dispute was merely theatrical. He emphasized the substantial scale of China's reclamation efforts on Mischief Reef, a feature within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Teodoro reaffirmed that this large-scale construction activity occurred squarely within Philippine territory, asserting the country's sovereign rights against external claims.

The deployment of flares by Chinese forces poses significant safety risks to aircraft, even if there is no direct impact. This particular incident occurred while the Philippine Coast Guard aircraft was conducting a routine maritime surveillance flight over the Kalayaan Island Group.
