Early Fiber Optics: From Crossbows to Communication
To measure very small forces in 1887, a physics teacher ingeniously used glass rods attached to a crossbow to create fibers less than a tenth of a human hair's diameter. These fibers, some less than a tenth of a human hair's diameter, were initially used to measure very small forces.
Following these early experiments, other researchers determined that thin glass threads could transmit light signals. This shift in focus laid the groundwork for future advancements in communication technology.
