Philippines Expands Coast Guard with U.S. Patrol Boats

These boats, formerly known as the USCGC Marlin and Blofin, are scheduled to arrive in Manila in October and will be commissioned as BRP Pagasa (PATS 2701) and BRP Patag (PATS 2702), bolstering the PCG's operational capabilities.

A key feature of these boats is a stern ramp, enabling the rapid deployment and retrieval of rigid-hull inflatable boats, which are crucial for various maritime operations.

The official mission prioritizes search and rescue efforts, along with marine environmental protection, particularly focusing on oil spill responses and other related challenges.

The modernization of the Philippine Coast Guard fleet is taking place amidst escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea, with 56 Chinese vessels monitored in August 2026 across four key locations. This number represents an increase from the 48 vessels recorded in July, indicating sustained pressure at critical areas such as Ayungin Shoal and Escoda Shoal, underscoring the strategic imperative for fleet expansion.
