Philippines Gets New Ships from US, France, Japan

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is currently experiencing the most significant expansion in its history. This initiative includes plans for a substantial increase in its fleet size and a considerable boost in manpower.

Over the next five years, the PCG anticipates the arrival of dozens of new vessels, complemented by ambitious plans to grow its personnel count by an additional 40,000 by 2030, marking a period of rapid development for the organization.

The United States is facilitating the transfer of two former US Coast Guard vessels to the Philippines. These are Marine Protector-class patrol boats, designed for short-range patrols and rapid response missions.

The vessels have been renamed BRP Pag-asa (27001) and BRP Patag (27002) and are expected to arrive in Manila by October 2026, significantly enhancing the PCG's operational capabilities.

To prepare for the arrival of the new US patrol boats, Philippine personnel have undergone specialized training in the United States. This training, focused on operating the new vessels, concluded on August 20th in Maryland.

The Philippines has set an ambitious target to acquire 50 ships over the next five years, a goal confirmed by Commodore Numei Caabi. This significant fleet expansion is a core pillar of the Marcos administration's broader modernization efforts.

Commodore Numei Caabi stated, "Within the five years, we will be anticipating the arrival of 50 more ships."

France is contributing to the Philippine Coast Guard's expansion by supplying 40 fast patrol craft, a deal valued at 258 billion pesos, equivalent to approximately $438 million. This acquisition is set to significantly enhance the PCG's capacity for rapid response operations.

To foster local industry, half of these boats will be built in the Philippines. The agreement also includes a comprehensive 9-year integrated logistics support plan, ensuring long-term maintenance and operational readiness.

Small vessels provide essential operational flexibility, proving highly effective for daily missions such as combating smuggling and piracy, as well as conducting local search and rescue operations. Their agility allows them to navigate shallow waters and respond quickly to incidents close to shore.

These smaller craft also reduce the operational strain on larger offshore vessels, allowing them to focus on high-endurance patrols and more complex maritime security tasks.

Japan is playing a crucial role by financing five 97-meter multi-role response vessels for the Philippine Coast Guard. This initiative is a continuation of the maritime safety capability improvement project, reflecting ongoing collaboration between the two nations.

These large-scale vessels are specifically designed for high-endurance operations and to effectively handle rough sea conditions, providing a robust platform for sustained patrols in the Philippines' vast maritime domain.

The delivery of these vessels is scheduled for 2027 and 2028, further bolstering the PCG's capacity to conduct long-range surveillance and respond to incidents across its exclusive economic zone.

Their enhanced capabilities will allow the Philippine Coast Guard to conduct more extensive and sustained operations, crucial for protecting the nation's maritime interests and resources.
