The Challenge of Tracing Cosmic Rays
The universe is constantly bombarding Earth with cosmic rays, which are atomic nuclei accelerated to near light speed by mysterious processes. These particles carry millions of times more energy than those generated in the Large Hadron Collider.
However, tracing these high-energy cosmic rays back to their sources is nearly impossible. As electrically charged atomic nuclei, they bend and bounce through the magnetic fields of the galaxy and beyond, causing them to ricochet and obscure their original trajectories by the time they reach Earth.
