Saudi Arabia was among the first ten countries to complete the UNESCO Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM), which covered education, social, economic, and environmental sectors. This comprehensive assessment aimed to critically reflect on its national AI strategy and challenge existing assumptions guiding its future direction.
The assessment resulted in a detailed roadmap of 23 specific recommendations tailored to the Kingdom's unique needs. These recommendations provide actionable steps for advancing ethical and responsible AI development within the country.
Instead of compulsory regulations, Saudi Arabia implemented an incentive-based 'AI ethics badge' system to encourage voluntary adherence to ethical guidelines. This innovative approach aims to foster a culture of ethical AI without imposing strict mandates.
The Kingdom also developed a national AI index to systematically measure government readiness across key dimensions, including strategy, governance, and infrastructure. This index provides a benchmark for progress and helps identify areas for further development.
